hello my name is Michelle Swift and I'm the pro bono program manager here at Maryland volunteer lawyer service and today I'm going to talk to you about volunteering with M BLS once you sign up to be a volunteer on our website we send you a volunteer handbook that goes over information about our program and it also has contact information for our staff so that if you run into any issues concerns or problems you will know who to contact here at M BLS there's lots of benefits to volunteering with our program you get to gain courtroom experience we offer trainings on a wide variety of topics we keep track of your pro bono hours we have a reduced fee panel that will pay volunteer attorneys who have at least three years of family law experience a reduced fee of $80 an hour up to $1,600 we have an office space for you to use if you need to interview your clients we provide you with malpractice insurance and also mentors when we accept clients into our program we carefully screen them to make sure that they qualify for asset and income guidelines we also make sure that they have a meritorious case once you accept the case from our program the clients file is emailed filed or fax to you whichever you prefer we also send the client a letter asking them to contact the attorney within five days and we also send the client a client tips because we want to make sure that they are respectful of your time that they keep all of the appointments that they tell you about the facts of their case even the not-so-great facts and that they should arrive 30 minutes before your their hearing we also take that time to remind clients that they are responsible for the non-waivable court costs and pocket expenses related to their case we also have tips for our volunteers we expect the clients to be treated with the same dignity and respect as your paying clients excluding any unforeseen circumstances the matter should be seen through the end of the case that set forth in your representation agreement if the client comes to you with multiple legal problems don't feel like you have to take on all of those cases however if you do we ask that you please contact contact our program so that we can open up another matter for you to make sure that you receive proper pro bono credit M BLS will check in with you 30 days after you've received that case to make sure that the client has made contact with you and to also see if you need any guidance mentors or interpreters quarterly we will send an email out to all of our attorneys asking them to update us on the cases or if the case is closed we ask that you please submit the form including the total hours that you spent on that case so that we can make sure that you receive proper pro bono credit when you notify offset a case has been closed we send a client satisfaction survey to the client and one of the questions that we ask our clients is tell us three words that best describes their volunteer and the more words the more common words that are used you will see in this sample the larger the text is so our clients feel that our volunteers are very helpful professional knowledgeable kind wonderful caring and understanding so click on the link above to be directed to the MV LS website where you can fill out an application form and help us in our fight for justice for all thank you
