Understand Socialism, Communism, Fascism, & Nazism in 15 Minutes (Part I)

one of my oldest and most popular videos is the quick explanation of the differences between socialism communism and fascism it’s also gotten a lot of criticism I’ve learned a lot since… 2012! good lord this is an old video there are some good criticisms of the last version and some questions it didn’t answer this new version tries to take care of all of that it still tastes great and it’s less filling the goal here is to give people information and not start arguments but I go where the evidence leads me so I look forward to a spirited debate in the comments and hopefully not having to delete too many of them for being abusive first what’s socialism what socialism is or should be has been argued over since the 1800s it’s not possible to cover every single version so let’s stick with the general ideas and some of the best known versions to give you the basic flavor socialism wants less economic competition and fewer people getting rich in exchange for some sort of plan in society that makes sure everyone gets everything they need the goal is to end the capitalist exploitation of workers and make everyone equal if you think that sounds a little vague you are correct socialism is half a criticism of what is– capitalism–and half a suggestion of what to do instead the only thing all socialists agree on is that anything used to produce goods or services–the means of production– would be owned by all of society some socialists want to keep markets and let people sell their own labor some socialists want to get rid of profit altogether some socialists say that an economic plan by society will mean too much central power so they want to decentralize everything and find a way to make important decisions as a group other socialists want democratic control of the economy the way democratic control the government works as you might imagine not all of these systems have been tried in the real world though some European countries today consider themselves democratic socialists to give a real-world example from the same time period as the Nazis communists and fascists we have the 1932 German Social Democratic Party’s platform they wanted to keep a republic unlike the Nazis and the Communists who wanted to replace it with different things and they supported free speech unlike the Nazis who wanted to attack communists they also wanted to build public works to create jobs to cut the size of government and reduce taxes and had the rather unpopular view that Germany should pay all of its war debts so that’s socialism in a nutshell what’s communism? basically communism is an extreme version of socialism it falls in the camp of socialism which says violent revolution is needed to get to peaceful equality eventually not just needed but inevitable because capitalism sucks so much as Marx says all history is the history of class struggle it also comes down on the side of needing a central power to reorganize things into a fair system so more government versus the socialists who want to go straight to less the Communist Manifesto says that the proletariat the workers will use its political supremacy to wrest by degree all capital from the bourgeois meaning the rich to centralize all instruments of production in the hands of the state Marx also says that communist ends can be attained only by the forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions though to be fair he said that in the 1840s when things were pretty miserable for workers who often couldn’t vote in their own country’s elections and only getting worse as a result communist revolutions and takeovers always come with a lot of violence and every communist country has had a lot of internal repression communism is also, in theory at least, trying to completely eliminate markets and private sales of goods and services rather than keeping them under some form of collective management though most communist countries have had to back off from that at some point because they would run out of stuff like food the goal is the famous line from each according to his ability to each according to his needs that’s the general picture of communism though there are a lot of specific differences between different communist countries like China versus the Soviet Union most of those differences boil down to different approaches to creating communism or how much of a free-market or democratic government to allow part of the reason not to say more is that they’re kind of boring then there’s the complaint that communism as set out by Marx has never actually been tried every communist state that’s come into existence has argued that they’re fulfilling communism in the real world so you’ll have to decide for yourself if the outcomes communism has gotten so far truly represent the idea or if there’s some other way to do it that comes out differently so that’s communism what’s the difference between socialism and communism? get used to hearing that something is argued about because I’ll be saying that a lot but no one exactly agrees on where socialism stops and communism starts there are some differences mostly about how much state control and aggressive action would be required also socialists might still let people have some differences in property and status while communists supposedly wanted to end all personal property and class differences, though that never actually happened in any communist country Marx seemed to think that socialism of some sort would happen after capitalism and then communism would happen after that many socialists have criticized communist countries saying that they just replaced capitalists with the government basically historic socialism is like communism’s hippie cousin–that’s one reason it stayed more popular even after World War II and the Cold War with people like Albert Einstein and more recently Bernie Sanders arguing for it both of whom had crazy hair… coincidence?!? yes yes it is

  1. Appreciate the effort, but this video is full of misconceptions. First of all, the difference between socialism and communism is that socialism is an economic system and communism is a type of society.

It is true that there are lots of different types of socialism, but the most broad definition that encompasses all of them would be, that socialism is a term for an economic system and social arrangement within production which is based upon the idea of social ownership and democratic control of the means of production. So basically, it is a system in which the means of production are owned and democratically controlled by the people involved in production and consumption at a local level.

Furthermore, social ownership does not necessarily imply that it is an ownership of all members of society. Social ownership can also refer to a cooperative or collective ownership, which means that it is an ownership of the organization's members, or to a public ownership, which means that is an ownership of the general public.

As for communism, none of existing "communist states" ever considered itself to be communist society, in fact the very term "communist state" itself is an oxymoron, because the definition of communism is a classless, moneyless, and stateless society in which the means of production are in common ownership, i.e. they are ownership of all members of society. In such society every individual would be free to voluntarily associate himself as he will and all affair would be managed democratically by people them self.

  2. Hi – A commie here

You kind of mentioned that in the video, but allow me to put by 3 cents into it.
A difference between communist and socialist have always been in groups distinctions. Generally both agree capitalism is bad and both agree that common ownership of means of production is good. But then USSR come. Basically those that agreed with Soviets used term Communist – since they achieved Socialism (at least that's what Stalin claimed), so that is the way to go – and those disagreeing – the "politically incorrect" (that's origin of that term) – used term Socialist.

After the fall of USSR naturally terms becomes synonyms again, as they were before 1917. That thing changed with Bernie campaign. Bernie run as social democrat, but using label democratic socialist. That created huge interest in "what that socialism thing is actually". But since socialist for some begun to mean social democrat many people, such as myself decided to go with label communist.

As for plans – there is also this thing called "decentralized planning". Big reason of why have those and not market is to avoid ever building 7 times more houses then there are homeless people, effectively ending boom-bust circle.

Bourgeois are not always the rich, nor the rich are always the bourgeois. Former is one that owns the means of production, while latter is someone who have lot's of money. Good example of that are actors they are the proletariat [workers working for wage], simultaneously being rich.

Hmm – funny you mention food – often the first thing on after revolution to do list is to become self sustainable. It's easy to look at Ukrainian famine and say "oh – they lack food" but zoom out a bit and then find out famines of similar size happened once-twice each decade prior and not happened after. Especially with technology of today – there was some African country (forgot which one) that after its revolution reached food sustainability in like 4 years.
Some exceptions do apply, like DPRK – mostly due to sanctions.

"Communist want to end all personal property" – no, that's not it – nobody want's to even touch personal property. What communists want to end is private property ( https://youtu.be/eknoQYrgq60 ). Also – Marx predicted that socialism will begin in the most advanced nation, and it begun in Russia of all places. Requirements for socialism were not met, so they supplemented themselves by state capitalism. He also somewhat said that before communism could be achieved socialism must be world-wide, although I'm not sure it was his words or something Trocky imagined.

Also one thing, that is unfortunately a common misconception, is the democracy thing. Idea of socialism is as you said workers control of the means of production. How they can control them if not democratically? There are a differences between socialist democracy and what we have today. Socialist democracy is direct for one thing – it is rarely representative and both questions and answers are not pre-decided by some other body. For instance there would be no question who to vote for to be our president for next 4 years, rather what should we do about X.
Also – and this is something almost all socialists and communists agree on – if it comes down that a representative is actually needed – it is generally agree that they can be recoiled at any time during their cadence. Even the day after their election.

And lastly – I like the fact you used picture of Einstein in both this and previous video. Have you by chance read his essay "Why socialism?"

  3. >democratic socialist is social democrat
    fucking Rosa killer.
    >personal property is private property
Well then, I guess I'll just collectivise your toothbushes mate.

  4. Prussia was a city-state founded by the Order of Teutonic Knights. It is the foundation of the modern nation that would most accurately be called "United Germany". Germany is one of the younger nations on Earth, America is 100 years older than Germany. Prussia was the driving force behind the uniting of city states that is today called Germany. Prussia/United Germany is the political environment that produced Karl Marx and communism. Prussia and "United Germany" was the birthplace of communism, and the German Reich (which most people incorrectly call "Nazi Germany”) was a highly nationalist communist state. Although the Soviet Union emerged first, the German Reich was in many ways "true communism" because that political system had emerged from the original communist ideology that had emerged as the politics of "United Germany".

This is history that is intentionally suppressed these days because American “educators” want to advance the anti-American propaganda that the German Reich was "right wing". In reality, what is today called the "right" refers those who trace their political heritage to the republics of Greece, Rome, and the United States. What is today called the "left" refers to those who trace their political heritage to communism… the Soviet Union, "United Germany"/German Reich, and modern China. The only other basic form of government known to man, other than a republic (“right”) or communism (“left”), is some type of king.

This is the reason that Prussian and early German history are so confusing too people, because American “educators” intentionally teach lies about this aspect of history because they desperately want to brainwash their students into believing that Nazi Germany was "right wing". In reality, there has NEVER been a "fascist republic" or any type of "right wing evil empire". Such a thing has NEVER EXISTED!!! All such nations in modern history have been communist, or "left wing". What is taught of this history in schools is pure anti-American propaganda and is the source of confusion regarding Prussia… the birthplace of communism (“the left”)!

The whole reason that the terms "right" and "left" are used is to obscure the true nature of their origins and who each side really represents. Almost nobody would support "communism", and the communists have known this for over 100 years. They never call communism by that name. They use other names for it… "socialism", "progressive", or the very nebulous "left v right". There have only ever been three basic forms of government known to humanity. Some type of king, a republic (“right"), or communism (“left”). This is what the communists desperately don't want you to know.

  5. Fascism is not a form of government, it is simply the belief that "If I don't like it, then you should not be allowed to do it."

  6. With capitalism not included in this title makes it known in a nutshell that this is a fascist post/ post, probably Koch brothers/ corporate government influenced/funded.

  7. We need an open discussion of the differences as so many young idiots are calling everybody that they dont like a fascist.

  8. I think you did a fine academic job with this video and are to be congratulated. It's too bad so many commentors are interested only in bitter insults, not a factual discussion.

  9. Socialism is a huge spectrum, actually. It is any situation where The State appropriates property from its people, and then disperses it out again. That's really it.

Marx was going down the road of Communism when he invoked Socialism.. he was talking about an extreme type of socialism, which would lead to communism.

It was a Collectivist, Anarchical Socialism.

Fascism is, however, a Collectivist, Hierarchical Socialism.

Socialism is a spectrum. As is Capitalism. They exist on the two ends of a single line.

Capitalism seems to invoke individualism, however there is nothing about it that says individuals have to be the lowest unit of resolution. It could be groups, of nearly any size. As long as no outside force were being used to control those groups.

I know this is weird, but I think we are being sold a few bills of goods on this one 🙂

  10. Like many comments, this is the political watered down explanation. Not for education on what they are, but what they are being politically correct.

  11. I remembered the previous videos, as he did not grasp that Nazi Germany was left wing socialism, The National Socialist Party founded from Marxism, and so much socialism that the German government had to intertwine corporations I to the governing body to provide all for their people, making it fascism. Socialism intertwined with large corporations is the classic definition of fascism. One has to have socialism to create fascism, and it is to the left on the political line, as it is not right wing. Nazi Germany providing a car for their people, the people's car, VW, ends with the VW and Mercedes Benz, becoming part of the German government. This huge socialism, fascism, drove Germany into bankruptcy, and fueled the blaming of immigrants and minorities, rather than blaming their failed Marxism.

  12. @Scientific Socialism, Both are failed economic systems. Aside from the propaganda as to what motivates the communitarianism, in the end, both are failed left wing governmental bodies. 13. @Jerry Mander, It is ignorance of what fascism is, huge socialism the blends corporations into government. —– Concerning Socialism and communism, aside from the propaganda as to what motivates the communitarianism, in the end, both are failed left wing governmental bodies. 14. @Cherno Stripe, Of all the comments, yours is the one that I will remember. Thanks for the much needed laugh. Seriously, your comment puts it in perspective. I have always been an Ayn Rand fan, as she really exposed communism for what it truly was. Even in her fictional accounts, she rips them to shreads, as well as in her non fiction (Capitalism The Unknown Ideal – Ayn Rand, non fiction.) ———————-. It is ignorance of what fascism is, huge socialism the blends corporations into government. —- Concerning Socialism and communism, aside from the propaganda as to what motivates the communitarianism, in the end, both are failed left wing governmental bodies. 15. I don't disagree with everything you said but I do disagree with one thing you said and that is that Bernie Sanders argues for socialism he does not argue for socialism
    He argues for social democracy

  16. @symbolsarenotreality, No, remember the Nazi's were fascists, and they were the National Socialist Party, largest Socialist govt in history. Again, you are wrong.

  17. NSDAP was the only successful Socialist society. In 12 years, look what they achived then it took the whole World to bring them down.

  18. @cigarrete, Coming from an individual making excuses for state owning everything of any monetary value in Communist countries, pretending personal property is different. The only difference between private property, owned by the state in Communist and many Socialist nation's, as opposed to personal property that their state allows the worker/citizen enslaved to own, is that the state owns is worth money, xtheir personal affects are not worth anything, and are burned when they die. Their worn out clothes and shoes, the state is so generous, that big govt let's them keep it.

  19. If you call national socialism as "nazism" then you do not know and understand enough truthful information about national socialism and if you do then you are a deceiver and most likely a jewish propaganda liar.

  20. Socialism will never work because people are selfish. The reason capitalism works is because it provides the incentive for everyone to work hard or die. Let's be honest.

  21. I think you do not say a correct thing in the entire video. Your definition of socialism and communism is absolutute trash. From a Spanish communist.

  22. In the past 100 years Socialist / Communist regimes have killed over 140 million people and enslaved many millions more. — How many more lives must be destroyed before it enters the retarded dogmatic minds of the political left that in whatever form that it has been tried and implimented, Socialism has FAILED because it is a BAD IDEA.

  23. Lol the comments section on this one can be summarised thus: 'Everyone is an idiot, I know what the real ideology of… is.' shit video though. Communists don't believe power must be obtained through violent means. Just the overthrow of the current system. That could be by violence. Could also be by a popular uprising that can no longer be ignored. Socialism is a lovely ideal. It doesn't work in the real world. For one because Capitalism and Socialism don't really mix. Human greed will always get in the way. Bernie Sanders has some socialist principles yes but he's not such an idealoguethat he wants a socialist state. Most people when they are well informedhave a mix between socialist principles and democratic ones and a bit rightwing authoritarian ones too. This whole division America between left and right is really damaging peoples education on these issues I think. It's not black and white in the real world. This is actually democracy works. We need these different view points in a melting pot. Idealogues in power from the left or right is when you get your Mussolini's.

  24. similarities of all governments?: Secrecy and corruption. herd immunity is a joke but herd morality is more practical

  25. You use "Communism" in the most abstract sense then? When you say "Communist Country" that's a contradiction, when a society has reached Communism, presumably the entire Earth, the state/government would have withered away and all meaningful society wide decisions would have been done by direct Democracy.

  26. We are just few more dollars away from becoming a Totalitarian State: https://fiscal.treasury.gov/files/reports-statements/financial-report/2018/03282019-FR(Final).pdf

  27. There are zero democratic socialist European countries. They are social democracies, they are still 100% capitalist.

  28. Whats it called/labelled when ppl just simply make decisions based on logic, critical thought and just doing whats right?

  29. Volunteer labor turns to nobody working, turns to government getting pissed nobodys working so either they are forced to or they come up with reason to force people into labor. Usually seen in forms of labor camps replacing regular prisons. Gulags people, wake.up. why do the great people of America always want to regress??

  30. If I spend 5 hours making a widget, and it costs me $50 Dollars to make it, if I don't make a profit when I sell it, then I worked for free. I worked for nothing.

  31. Nazism? How the actual fuck can you take an “educational” video seriously when they make up a term? Nazism? The hell? National socialism.

  32. I love how those who question the definition of socialism can’t agree on a definition yet state that America needs it.
    Lol…..

Narcissism combined with ignorance is so fascinating.

  33. there is no difference between socialism and communism, case in point, bernie fucking sanders, and the only thing they agree upon is a communist future, there is a reason Germans didn't want Eastern Germans to be allowed to effect the outcome of elections, again, we have Angela Merkel, but Germans were so brainwashed to hate themselves that well now we have ( effectively) a failed fucking state, full of Muslim radicals, that rape and murder Germans *(good job USA and USSR, in teaching self hatred), don't worry the terrorism is coming to you soon, and you idiots designed it!

  34. socialism is a child's idea to fix the world's problems while simultaneously becoming one of the greatest evils in any intelligent society…

  35. ok whatever coward wrote me and then ran away, they are exactly the same fucking thing, the end result is always the same, seriously read Mein Kampf Volume 1, chapter eleven and tell me how it is so not the same, who in the end does such a system benefit? JEWS, meanwhile they advocate for it, social justice, yet control the majority of shares of the very reason it is necessary to have Unions, to have the Socialists parties. you can't prove me wrong, just explain the first USSR government 6 of 13 were Jews, despite being at most 10 percent of the population. And Jews will not even reject it, this atheist anti everyone idea, that stupid idea of communism, always the jews come out on top. This is proof Hitler was write, the secular jew is a communist, and our goal is to exterminate communist! Remember by, the very nature of the race, the Jews are condemned for contaminating their race, but openly advocate, the destruction of all other races, read the Torah, somehow these are the pure race, at least that admit that is what they want!

  36. Debate me

Fascism is Moderate/Centrist Authoritarianism the two "great thinkers" (sarcasm) of Fascism, Mussolini and Hitler, both sought to create an authoritarian state with a mixture of socialist and market economy (capitalist) concepts.

(I'm not saying it is good or that Right Wing Authoritarianism/Left Wing Authoritarianism are good either. I am saying because it clearly mixes Right Wing and Left Wing concepts it is Moderate/Centrist. And this isnt stating that Centrism is bad either… centrism is great when it mixes the good ideas of the left and right…. centrism is functional when it allows the left and the right not to kill each other…. it is awful when it mixes the worst ideas of the left and right and it is horrible when it mixes the bad ideas of the left and right THEN pushes for authoritarianism ie Fascism.)

  37. Socialism is an ideology. Communism is a made up utopia that was used as an excuse for everything that went bad in socialism

  38. I'm confused as to why you're saying socialist want less government? When everything is socialized it's all controlled by government creating a huge government machine with high taxes.
