UK Elects Socialist Leader Jeremy Corbyn. Will He Succeed?

>>THE ELECTION OF JEREMY CORBYN
TO BE THE HEAD OF THE U.K.’S LABOUR PARTY IS ALREADY PAYING
OFF, AT THE VERY LEAST, FOR THAT PARTY. THEIR MEMBERSHIP ROLLS
ARE SOARING TO AT LEAST RECENT HISTORICAL HIGHS. HIS SUCCESS IN
THE NEAR FUTURE IN TERMS OF BEING ABLE TO GET HIS POLICIES
PUT INTO PRACTICE IS STILL A LITTLE BIT UP FOR DEBATE, AND HE
IS A CONTROVERSIAL FIGURE, WHICH WE WILL TALK ABOUT A BIT IN THIS
CLIP. BUT THE NUMBERS ARE GOOD, AT LEAST OVER THE PAST TWO
WEEKS. THE LATEST NUMBERS RELEASED BY LABOUR SHOW THAT
62,000 PEOPLE HAVE JOINED IN THE WEEK SINCE SATURDAY 12
SEPTEMBER. THIS COMPARES TO LESS THAN 62,000 PEOPLE WHO WERE
MEMBERS OF THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS, ACCORDING TO FIGURES
LAST RELEASED IN JUNE. TOTAL PARTY MEMBERSHIP IS NOW AROUND
380,000. THAT IS A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THAT. THE FIGURE IS
APPROACHING THE 400,000 FIGURE RECORDED AT THE 1997 ELECTION.
ALTHOUGH IN PREVIOUS DECADES, QUITE A BIT AGO, THEY HAD
CLOSE TO A MILLION MEMBERS. SO IT IS STILL OUT OF HISTORIC
HIGHS.>>EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT FROM GREAT
BRITAIN AND DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS, A LOT OF
PEOPLE KNOW THE GREEN PARTY. YOU WOULD THINK IF YOU WERE VERY
LIBERAL YOU MIGHT BE IN FAVOR OF THE GREEN PARTY, BUT THEY HAVE
67,000 MEMBERS, WHICH AGAIN IS VERY SIMILAR TO A NUMBER THAT
SIGNED UP FOR THE LABOUR PARTY JUST AFTER CORBYN GOT ELECTED TO
BE THE LEADER OF LABOUR. LABOUR IS A MUCH LARGER PARTY
HISTORICALLY, SO YOU HAVE TO KEEP THAT IN MIND AS WELL. BUT
THE OVERALL THEME HERE IS INDISPUTABLE, WHICH IS, THIS IS
A TREND. THIS IS A TREND WORLDWIDE, WHETHER IT IS THE
GREEKS, BERNIE SANDERS’ POPULARITY IN THE U.S., CANADA.
IN ALBERTA, LIBERALS WINNING IN ALBERTA. FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT
FAMILIAR WITH THE POLITICS OF CANADA, THAT IS AMAZING, UNPRECEDENTED. THE LEFT IS
SURGING. THERE IS A VERY GOOD REASON WHY. LET’S TELL YOU ABOUT
WHO CORBYN IS IF YOU AREN’T FAMILIAR WITH HIM, THEN WE WILL
EXPLAIN HOW HE FITS INTO THIS PUZZLE.>>REALLY FAST, THIS SEEMS TO BE
A CLEAR TREND. ONE PERSON ISN’T BUYING IT, YOU MIGHT REMEMBER
THE NAME TONY BLAIR. “IF JEREMY CORBYN BECOMES LEADER IT WON’T
BE A DEFEAT LIKE 1983 OR 2015 AT THE NEXT ELECTION. IT WILL MEAN
ROUTE, POSSIBLY ANNIHILATION.” WE WILL LOOK AT HIS POLICY
POSITIONS AND MAYBE WE CAN DECIDE IF THEY WILL BE
ANNIHILATED.>>OF COURSE IF YOU KNOW SOME OF
THOSE POSITIONS, YOU KNOW WHAT TONY BLAIR IS ACTUALLY WORRIED
ABOUT IS HIS OWN ANNIHILATION, BECAUSE CORBYN BELIEVES THAT HE
SHOULD BE ARRESTED FOR WAR CRIMES. SO TONY BLAIR IS LIKE,
I DO DECLARE, IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO PUT CORBYN IN CHARGE.
BECAUSE YOU ARE LOOKING AT A JAIL CELL. COULD YOU IMAGINE?>>THAT CAN’T BE RIGHT. YOU CAN’T
VISIT LONDON ANYTIME SOON.>>THAT IS WHY PEOPLE ARE TIRED
OF THE OBAMAS AND HILLARY CLINTONS AND TONY BLAIRS AND
ALL THESE LUKEWARM PROGRESSIVES THAT AREN’T REALLY PROGRESSIVE.
THEY HIJACK THE PROGRESSIVE PARTIES IN THEIR RESPECTIVE
COUNTRIES AND TURN THEM INTO ANOTHER WAY OF SERVING THE
CORPORATE INTERESTS. AND PEOPLE ARE BEING — TIRED OF BEING
CRUSHED BY THE CORPORATE MACHINE. NOW LET’S GO TO CORBYN’S
POLICIES.>>WE HAVE POLICIES IN A NUMBER
OF DIFFERENT CATEGORIES, AND UNDERSTAND OBVIOUSLY, A VERY
DIFFERENT POLITICAL CONTEXT IN THE U.K. SOME OF THESE WE WILL
PROBABLY LIKE, BUT THERE ARE SOME IN THIS LIST THAT I DON’T
EXPECT CENK WILL APPROVE OF. HIS PLATFORM INCLUDES
RE-NATIONALIZING BRITAIN’S RAILROAD SYSTEM AND ENERGY
COMPANIES, ABOLISHING TUITION FOR BRITISH UNIVERSITIES, AND
IMPOSING CONTROLS TO DEAL WITH BRITAIN’S AFFORDABLE HOUSING
PROBLEM. SOME OF THOSE SOUND LIKE YOU MIGHT HEAR BERNIE
SANDERS TALKING ABOUT IN THIS COUNTRY.>>THAT IS DEFINITELY TO THE LEFT
OF BERNIE SANDERS.>>A LITTLE BIT. HE TALKED ABOUT
MAKING FREE PUBLIC COLLEGE TUITION, THAT IS SOMETHING. HE HAS NOT TALKED ABOUT RENT
CONTROL NECESSARILY, BUT I COULD USE IT.>>YOU ARE RIGHT, I THINK A SURGE
LEFT THROUGHOUT THE WORLD IS A GREAT THING OVERALL, AS A
BALANCING MEASURE. AM I THAT FAR LEFT? NO, I’M NOT. I’M JUST NOT.
FREE UNIVERSITIES, THAT IDEA I LOVE. MAYBE I AM BIASED BECAUSE
MY DAD GOT A FREE EDUCATION, OTHERWISE I WOULD BE AN OLIVE
FARMER IN SOUTHEASTERN TURKEY. THE TURKISH VERSION OF [SPITTOON
SOUND EFFECT]. FREE EDUCATION MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE,
OPPORTUNITY, ETC. RENT CONTROL — THAT HAS NOT WORKED OUT THAT
WELL. IT HAS A BAD HISTORY.>>IT IS TRUE, BUT WE HAVE SOME
FUCKING PROBLEMS IN AMERICA IN TERMS OF RENT. IT’S TOO DAMN HIGH. AND IT IS UNLIKELY TO GO DOWN IN
THE FUTURE.>>I KNOW, BUT PRICE CONTROLS
HAVE NEVER WORKED. IT IS A TERRIBLE IDEA IF YOU ASK ME. BUT
WHEN IT COMES TO ECONOMICS I AM MUCH MORE CENTRIST, EVEN MAYBE
CENTER-RIGHT. AS MUCH AS I LIKE CORBYN, I DON’T AGREE WITH THAT.
WOULD I VOTE FOR HIM? SHOW ME THE ALTERNATIVES. GIVEN THE
ALTERNATIVES, SURELY. AND A CENTRAL COMPONENT, WHICH
WE HAVEN’T GOTTEN TO.>>HE IS OPEN TO REOPENING THE
COAL MINES THAT USED TO BE A BIG PART OF BRITAIN’S ECONOMY. I
DON’T KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT BRITAIN’S CAPACITY FOR
ALTERNATIVE ENERGY AT THIS POINT, IN TERMS OF BEING ABLE TO
POWER THEIR NATION’S GRID. I WOULDN’T WANT THEM TO GO BACK
IN THE DIRECTION OF COAL. THAT DOESN’T SEEM GOOD.>>I THINK WHAT HE’S DOING IS
BEING POPULIST AND SAYING I WILL BRING YOU YOUR JOBS.>>I GET THAT.>>BUT MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT,
HE’S USING AN OLD RIGHT WING TRICK FROM HERE IN AMERICA,
WHICH IS, I WILL BRING YOU BACK TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS. REMEMBER
WHEN BRITAIN WAS DOING WELL IN YOUR CHILDHOOD WHEN WE
HAD THE COAL MINES — I KNOW WE HAD ISSUES BUT YOU
LOVE YOUR CHILDHOOD, YOU KNOW? I WILL BRING YOU BACK TO THAT
TIME.>>THEY WILL COLONIZE INDIA NEXT
WEEK.>>THAT IS FUNNY. IT IS A CLEVER
LITTLE STRATEGY.>>HE WANTS TO — YOU MIGHT LIKE
SOME OF THESE. HE WANTS TO END BRITAIN’S AUSTERITY SPENDING
CUTS, AND ALSO PROPOSES SOMETHING CALLED PEOPLE’S
QUANTITATIVE EASING, IN WHICH THE BANK OF ENGLAND WOULD PRINT
MONEY TO INVEST IN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS.>>IF THEY DIDN’T DO QUANTITATIVE
EASING IN OTHER WAYS I WOULD SAY WHOA, DON’T PRINT MONEY. DON’T
BE CRAZY, THAT WILL LEAD TO INFLATION, ETC. I WOULD NEVER
WANT TO BE — EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT THEY DO DO
QUANTITATIVE EASING ALREADY, AND INSTEAD OF PAYING FOR THINGS
PEOPLE NEED AND THE PUBLIC NEEDS, THEY JUST GIVE IT TO THE
BANKERS AT NEARLY 0% INTEREST RATE. THAT IS A GOD DAMN CRIME.>>I PREFER THEIR VERSION TO
OURS, IN THAT RESPECT.>>YOU WANT TO DO PEOPLE’S
QUANTITATIVE EASING? IT IS BETTER THAN THE QUANTITATIVE
EASING WE HAVE NOW. I KNOW THAT WHAT THE FED DOES AND WHAT HE
WANTS TO DO HERE, IT IS A LITTLE MORE COMPLEX THAN THE
SIMPLISTIC WAY WE HAVE BROKEN IT DOWN, AND I KNOW THE POINT IS
FOR THE BANKS TO GO OUT THERE AND LEND MONEY TO OTHER PEOPLE
AND STEADY THE ECONOMY, I UNDERSTAND THAT. BUT
NONETHELESS, THEY GET TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS AT NEARLY 0%
INTEREST. YOU GIVE ME TRILLIONS, BILLIONS, MILLIONS, AT 0%
INTEREST RATE, I COULD MAKE A LOT OF MONEY TOO.>>THAT IS TRUE. SOMEDAY THEY’RE
GOING TO LOAN THE MONEY OUT. LET’S TURN TO FOREIGN POLICY. HE
WANTS TO WITHDRAW FROM NATO AND ABOLISH THE U.K.’S NUCLEAR
ARSENAL, AND HAS SUGGESTED THAT BLAIR COULD FACE A WAR CRIMES
TRIAL FOR HIS ROLE IN THE IRAQ WAR. LOOKING BACKWARDS. HE HAS
WRITTEN THAT RUSSIAN EXPANSIONISM IS NOT UNPROVOKED
AND AT THE OBSESSION WITH COLD WAR POLITICS THAT EXERCISES THE
NATO AND EU LEADERSHIPS IS FUELING THE CRISIS, AND IN ONE
SPEECH REFERRED TO BOTH HAMAS AND HEZBOLLAH AS FRIENDS
OF BRITAIN.>>THAT I DISMISS ENTIRELY. THE
REASON IS, HE IS LIKE, WE SHOULD INVITE OUR FRIENDS IN HEZBOLLAH
AND HAMAS — IT WAS A MANNER OF SPEAKING. HE SAYS, OF COURSE I
DID NOT MEAN THEY ARE MY FRIENDS. I MEANT WE SHOULD
NEGOTIATE WITH THE OTHER SIDE, THEY ARE THE OTHER SIDE. I AGREE
WITH THAT. ON THE RUSSIA STORY, I THINK HE IS BEING NAIVE ABOUT
RUSSIA. BUT YOU WANT TO NEGOTIATE WITH RUSSIA? I AM ALL
FOR THAT, I BELIEVE IN NEGOTIATION. I DON’T THINK YOU
SHOULD BLITZKRIEG INTO UKRAINE TO SHOW PUTIN WHO IS BOSS. I
DON’T BELIEVE IN GETTING RID OF THE NUCLEAR ARSENAL. THAT MAKES
ME A BAD LIB BUT IF I WAS GREAT BRITAIN I WOULD NOT DO THAT. ON
THE OTHER HAND, SHOULD PEOPLE WHO INVADED IRAQ UNDER FALSE
PRETENSES AND COMMITTED WAR CRIMES BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE? YES,
THAT IS WHAT WAR CRIMES ARE ABOUT. AND IF YOU ARE GOING TO
GO AFTER THE LOWLY SOLDIERS WHO DID IT — AND IN ABU GHRAIB WE
PUT AWAY SOME PEOPLE FOR TORTURE, BUT WE HAVE MEMOS THAT
GO ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP THAT SAY, TAKE THE GLOVES OFF AND
START DOING THESE PRACTICES. SHOULD WE PROSECUTE THEM? FAIR IS
FAIR.>>IF YOU LOCKED UP THE PEOPLE
WHO OBVIOUSLY LIED MULTIPLE COUNTRIES INTO GOING TO WAR,
MAYBE IN THE FUTURE, POLITICIANS WOULD THINK TWICE BEFORE LYING TO
US ABOUT SOMETHING AS SIGNIFICANT AS A SERIES OF
MULTI-TRILLION-DOLLAR WARS IN THE MIDDLE EAST.>>I DEFINITELY WOULD NOT
WITHDRAW FROM NATO. THERE’S A LOT I DISAGREE ON, BUT OVERALL,
GIVEN THE STATUS QUO, WOULD I RATHER KEEP VOTING FOR AN
ESTABLISHMENT CANDIDATE THAT WILL KEEP ON DOING THE SAME
THINGS THEY HAVE BEEN DOING, OR SOMEONE WHO IS GOING TO
SHAKE THE SYSTEM UP? I WILL VOTE FOR SHAKING IT UP.>>AGAIN, IT REMAINS TO BE SEEN
HOW SUCCESSFUL HE WILL BE IN TAKING HIS COALITION TOGETHER
AND ACTUALLY GETTING HIS LEGISLATION — LEGISLATIVE GOALS
ACCOMPLISHED. I LOOKED OVER SOME RECENT POLLING AND GENERALLY
WHEN A NEW LEADER IS ELECTED TO A PARTY THERE TENDS TO BE THIS
SIGNIFICANT BUMP, IN THE SAME WAY THAT OUR PRESIDENTIAL
ELECTIONS HAVE IT. HIS WAS MINOR, OR IF NOT NONEXISTENT,
WHICH GENERALLY IS NOT THE CASE, AND HIS POPULARITY ON A NUMBER
OF ISSUES IS LOW. HE IS OBVIOUSLY POPULAR ENOUGH THAT HIS
PARTY DID WELL AND HE DID WELL, BUT THERE ARE SOME ISSUES,
ESPECIALLY ECONOMIC POLICIES, WHICH I WOULD’VE IMAGINED
BRITAIN WOULD BE A FAN OF, CONSIDERING THE DAMAGE THAT
AUSTERITY HAS DONE TO BRITAIN, AT LEAST FROM OUR
PERSPECTIVE, BUT HE DOESN’T SEEM TO BE VERY POPULAR ON
THOSE ISSUES. NOT AT PRESENT.>>LET ME SAY TWO THINGS ABOUT
THAT. FIRST OF ALL, THE CENTRAL THEME IS, HE IS AGAINST
AUSTERITY. AND LOTS OF PARTS OF EUROPE INCLUDING THE U.K. ARE SICK
OF AUSTERITY. THAT MESSAGE WILL RESONATE, THAT IS WHY HE IS
POPULAR. IT IS NOT LIKE PEOPLE VOTED FOR THEM EVEN WITH THE
LABOUR PARTY LIKE, I CAN’T WAIT TO GET OUT OF NATO. I WILL VOTE
FOR THIS GUY. OR I AGREE WITH HIS VIEWS ON HEZBOLLAH OR
WHATEVER. NO, THEY HATE AUSTERITY, THAT’S WHY THEY VOTED
FOR HIM. THAT IS THE CENTRAL THESIS. A COUPLE MONTHS AGO —
DOES HE HAVE A CHANCE? THAT IS THE BIG QUESTION. A COUPLE
MONTHS AGO THE ODDSMAKERS, AT LEAST ACCORDING TO WHAT I READ,
WOULD HAVE PUT CORBYN AT 100-1 TO WIN THE LEADERSHIP OF LABOUR.
THEY WOULD’VE LOST A LOT OF MONEY. CAN HE WIN OVERALL? I
THINK THE ANSWER IS YES. I’M NOT SAYING HE WILL WIN OVERALL, I’M
SAYING HE CERTAINLY CAN WIN, AND THEY ARE GROSSLY UNDERESTIMATING
HIM. NUMBER ONE, THEY’RE UNDERESTIMATING PEOPLE’S — HOW
THEY ARE REPULSED BY THE ESTABLISHMENT. THAT IS TRUE HERE
IN THE U.S., AND THE U.K., AND THE ESTABLISHMENT KEEPS
UNDERESTIMATING IT. NUMBER TWO, HE IS RUNNING A POPULIST
CAMPAIGN, WHICH IS SMART. THAT COAL MINES THING SEEMS LIKE A
WEIRD THROWBACK TO US, BUT I THINK IT IS SMART POLITICS IN A
WAY THAT IS SUBCONSCIOUS IN A SENSE. AND HE IS COMING OUT
STRONG, PEOPLE LOVE STRONG POLITICIANS. THEY ARE USED TO
ASSOCIATING THE LEFT WITH WEAKNESS, THAT ASSOCIATION
DRIVES US CRAZY BUT THAT IS WHAT THE PROPAGANDA HAS BEEN ON BOTH
SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC. HE IS SAYING, YOU WANT TO SEE STRONG?
I WILL SHOW YOU STRONG. THAT RESONATES. COMBINE THAT WITH THE
FACT THAT THE U.K. IS SICK OF AUSTERITY, THEY LIKE HIS CENTRAL
IDEA, AND HE IS DOING ALL THESE OTHER THINGS RIGHT, IF YOU ARE
DISCOUNTING HIM, I THINK YOU ARE MAKING A TERRIBLE MISTAKE. MAYBE
I HOPE YOU CONTINUE TO MAKE THAT MISTAKE SO HE CAN WIN, AND WE
CAN DO DIFFERENT LEADERSHIP EVEN IF I DON’T AGREE WITH SOME OF
WHAT HE SAYS.

100 thoughts on “UK Elects Socialist Leader Jeremy Corbyn. Will He Succeed?

  1. Willie Rennie from the Scottish Liberal Democrats is a legend. He, and many others didn't want to go into coalition with the Tories, who got 23% of the UK vote in 2015. Scottish Parliamentary Elections are on Thursday and we are trying to get Scottish Labour in power. The SNP has been right-wing Tartan Tory for the past 9 years (voting against a Living wage SEVEN TIMES in the Scottish Parliament, along with the Tories) and Nicola Sturgeon had secret meetings with Cameron before the Independence Referendum in 2014. However, The Labour Party is now just over 500,000 and people are still joining. Kezia Dugdale is leader of the Scottish Labour Party and we are rooting for her!

  2. The UK have not elected Jeremy Corbyn, Labour Party members elected him leader of the Labour Party (not UK Prime Minister).

  3. Cenk has no idea. I would not waste my time on TYT after this. This is just a couple of blokes mouthing off in the pub – total waste of time.

  4. I wish people would get the terminology right. Bernie Sanders is a social democrat. The UK's Liberal Democrat party used to be known as the Social Democrats I.e. In the European sphere, Bernie Sanders would be classed as a left-leaning Liberal Democrat, not a Labour Party member or a socialist as he is incorrectly labelled in the US. The UK's Labour Party is based off of 'big government' where just about anything is nationalised (healthy and safety regulation for example. Bernie Sanders has said himself that he opposes big government mandate because he respects the individual's choice to life rather than having it thrust on them.

  5. Newsflash – as expected Corbyn's rise has opened a pandora's box of anti-semitism in the British left. The UK right loves Corbyn because he guarantees a right wing government for the foreseeable future while at the same time destroying the British left through internal fights. Corbyn also managed to lose ALL his seats in Scotland.

As usual the young turks prove they are clueless.

  6. There just isn't the strength of feeling about politics in UK as there is in USA, and austerity isn't an everyday buzzword for people talking at the water fountain. Corbyn won't win on a protest vote as Cenk suggests. He really is unelectable.

  7. In my opinion, the western world will have taken a colossal step forward for progressive democrats and those who want wealth inequality to start changing if Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn were elected President and Prime Minister respectively.

  8. interesting his policies list all these very so called social nationalism plans that don't sound emperically sound, but nothing about getting rid of corporations? I know the UK must be suffering from similar corporate oppression. I'm assuming UK has similar incorporation rules to US as well.

  9. uh.. the left isn't surging throughout the world… anti-establishment sentiment is what's surging. We're seeing just as many or even more far RIGHT wing parties getting voted into power as we're seeing left wing.

  10. the only vote in the UK that matters is the news paper, Council houses vote in droves for whomever their news paper puts in a positive light.

  11. Okay, rent control in america hasn't worked….because you didnt do it right AND it was different from the European style. It was working before Hail Thatcher took over.

  12. I think TYT should be investing their money and buying out networks as we speak. Trump ain't going to let these guys spout the truth in his own backyard and will close them down. Cenk will be lobbed in jail for trumped up charges unprovable, Ana will be financially ruined and stitched up as a sex offender or illicit affair, they'll make anything up to stop TYT promoting facts.

  13. Conservative Party: Liberal-Conservatism
    Labour: Socialist Republican

we are a multi party system, but there two are the two dominant opposing forces.
minor parties we have in Parliament in order of seats are:

    Scottish National Party: Separatist Liberal
    Liberal Democrats: Liberal
Plaid Cymru (Party of Wales): Separatist Liberal
Democratic Unionist Party: Northern Irish Conservatism
    Sinn Fein: Irish Republican
Ulster Unionist Party: Northern Irish Conservatism
    United Kingdom Independence Party: Conservative
    Green Party: Environmental Socialist

  14. The US is a much more right wing country than the UK. The American Democratic Party has similar political positions to the British Conservative Party. American politics is in desperate need of left wing politicians like Bernie Sanders to build a welfare state. However, Britain's welfare state has already been built, and we have had many left wing leaders in the past. In Britain we need a Centrist Prime Minister, ideally either David Miliband or Chuka Umunna.

  15. I don't know about Hezbolah but the Hamas comment, as I understand it, was actually him introducing Hamas diplomats at a diplomatic meeting. As in, "I'd like to welcome our friends from Hamas". I appreciate that you have seen through the media bullshit on the matter, but I felt it's worth pointing out that it's EVEN MORE nuanced than you have recognised, and when it comes down to it, how else are you supposed to introduce diplomats at a diplomatic meeting?

  16. Typical uninformed TYT. Corbyn is popular among left-wing activists, but just like every single other time the Labour party presents the wider British public with a left-wing leader, they reject him.

  17. corbyn wants British soldiers investigated over what went down in Iraq this man hates Britain he has built a party that hates jews hates white working class only interested in muslims die corbyn you'll never lead this country not a fuckin chance

  18. Libs did not win in Alberta. the NDP won, they are social demarcates. Gods Young Turks learn that there is more to the left then Libs. Hell the Libs are not even left.

  19. ira sympathizer, anti Semitic hates British soldiers this tosser corbyn will never lead this country never in a million years

  20. Americans talking about British politics, British politics which they clearly have no idea about. I have no issue with their subjective view on him, (I personally support Jeremy Corbyn), but you can't just project American politics into proposals about British politics. They are entirely different and the same policies would be entirely different in the two places. If you're going to talk about these sorts of things, you have to educate yourself on the issues in England (as discussed from across the spectrum of right and left perspectives) and the political history of it, at least relative history.
They talk of the coal mines and clearly have no understanding (or perhaps even knowledge) of the miner's strikes and Thatcher's notorious mistreatment of them, for one example. Jeremy is not calculated enough to do that nostalgia tactic they talk of. Like him or not, his policies are entirely based around his personal opinions and politics, (this is evident in his far from the political status quo approach and consistency in his policies over his long political career) he's just not calculating enough to formulate any plan to manipulate people, or their nostalgia.

  21. Misleading title. Corbin has to win the election before he is in power. It is quite clear that the Young Turks knowledge of U.K. politics is non existent.

  22. short answer would be no, he hasn't succeeded thus far. Tories are polling 18 points ahead and if they called a general election polls say that they'd win 47% of the vote which for the UK would get them a huge majority of seats.

  23. Jeremy Corbyn is a complete DICK. His party now has NO chance of being voted into power. With him as leader, Labour is now at its lowest popularity since the 2nd WW .Even his own cabinet ministers ( who have been resigning in droves ) admit that if we had a General Election tomorrow, the Labour Party would face anihillation.
BTW – The Green party in the UK is considered completely ineffectual : they are a joke.

  24. My hope is that Jeremy Corbyn wins in 2020 or whenever the next UK election is. Theresa May is a joke and dictator and a vile, vile woman, she's worse than Thatcher and I will be voting for Labor when the next election comes around

  25. Corbyn doesn't see Hamas, Hezbollah and Russia as "the other side" to negotiate with. That's your position but don't confuse it for his. His point is he's on their side against their shared enemy (in short, the US). He has an entire career of standing with dicators and terrorist groups simply because they oppose the US (he was formerly on the payroll of the Iranian government – Hezbollah's funders). This plus his inflation-causing economics (his dream economic policies are pretty much those enacted with drastic consequences in Venezuela – he has literally advocated to copy Venezuela in the past and never disavowed these policies as causing and worsening poverty) means he's totally unelectable in the UK. The UK effectively has no real opposition at the moment as a result (dangerous for democracy as that is) and it sees the Conservative party go unchallenged. The conservative government is ahead by 17 points despite its leader being chosen only by a handful of MPs (who largely despise her actually), and with no economic plan for the next few years, including on how to leave the EU (an issue on which Corbyn was his usual, characteristically weak self – he opposed the EU for his entire career, then half-heartedly backed the Remain side – publicly at least). He's an utter joke who is destroying progressive politics in the UK. Can we please have Bernie instead?

  26. How have you guys not covered his re election as leader? That was epic! His party establishment tried to take him down and wasigdillah he fucked them all

  27. Here in the UK if you want to rent a house and you are not on welfare the owner might charge you lets say £400 a month but lets say you want to rent the same house and you are currently on welfare well that means the government will pay your rent till you find a job ake housing benefit so what some owners of these houses do is instead of charging the welfare person looking to rent the house £400 a month, knowing the government will be paying the owner will charge 600 -700 a month simply because they know the government will pay it, and that's why the housing benefit is so expensive, and what does the government do? Do they blame the landlords for hiking the price up? No. They blame the person on welfare

  28. TYT, I enjoy your videos however, you're slightly misinformed on some of Corbyn's policies.
He didn't state he wanted to reopen coal mines, instead, he said he wanted to use an investment bank to develop high-tech renewable energy sources.
    Labour Party Member

  29. TYT how about redoing this, and look at how popular the Labour party is now with the electorate not just Corbyns interest group supporters. Basically Corbyn has killed the left here by making the Labour party unelectable.

  30. The biggest issue with Corbyn is whilst he might have great 'values' leadership, his 'people' leadership skills are…. well… he's not got Bernie's charisma lets put it that way…

  31. TItle is misleading. the average TYT watcher probably thinks he has actually been elected PM, and has a chance of winning which he doesnt.

  32. You are totally over estimating him… (fingers crossed) hopefully he will never get to be Prime Minister. The sooner he gets replaced the better, for Labour and for the UK. The UK people aren't as stupid to vote this guy in as America was with Trump. Luckily his polling is so bad that he is in negative figures in all demographic categories. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/02/10/jeremy-corbyn-unpopular-among-every-demographic-group-favourability/amp/

  33. A little sad to hear Cenk say the rise of the left is a world-wide trend in Sept 2015… within 12 months- Brexit & Trump

  34. Cenk's is quoting the right wing medias' story on how Corbin referred to Hezbollah as 'friends of Britain'…. that's not what he said so look it up!!!!!

  35. Cenk: "It's gonna be an annihilation…Corbyn is going to annihilate the Conservative Party!"
18 Months Later: Corbyn is down by 24 points in the polls.

  36. CENK, WTF? Have you ever rented an apt? If one pays rent for 15 years, they should have an obligatory RIGHT for a loan to purchase said property, including previous payments – basically, IF ONE PAYS $100k on a rental worth $200k, mandatory LOAN at approx. 2%.

  37. And yet Labour just got a kicking at the local elections. Most people in the UK see Corbyn as unelectable. Corbyn isn't seen as a progressive, he's seen as a regressive who wants to push the UK back to the bad days of the late 70s.

I'm also curious about austerity. What austerity? TBH I haven't noticed any real changes … apart from a weekly bin collection now being done every THREE weeks to save cash.

  38. Listening to this, about the strong thing, I feel like you guys predicted the Conservative (Tory) slogan "Strong and Stable."

  39. OMG How can you even think of voting for that dopey old TERRORIST LOVING FAILED MARXIST.     Even his own party kept him on the back benches for 27yrs  because he is a USELESS TWAT.

  40. Title is slightly misleading. He was elected by Labour party members, title makes it seem like he won a general election

  41. Rent controls on their own, do work.. many German cities operate a policy, notably, Berlin of rent control ( might add this applies to local authority housing stock) does not apply to private rent, which in German is rare compared to England &Wales (as opposed to the uk as a whole). And your memos seem a bit outdated, Labour policy is retention of NATO membership, but try to identify it`s modern role. And conference voted to renewal uk`s nuclear deterrent. Lastly, you American`s still see the Russian`s as the `boggyman`, many of us in the uk- Right and left- along with many EU nations see only one `boggy-man` country, constantly invading, overthrowing nations, supporting Saudi Arabia and illegal settlements on the West bank, pulling out of the Paris agreement, guess who that is?

  42. The wealthy and the media are against Corbyn!
At 33 years old I'm a first time voter! Homeless sleeping in the snow is new to our city's in the UK. Corbyn all day!! ❤️

  43. Corbin will destroy our country financially and weaken are security by cutting HM forces by 40% to 50% and pulling us out of NATO.

  44. Free Universities? Your having a Turkish mate. Do you know how much open university costs. A lot more the similar online courses. When the government gets hold of things they become expensive.

  45. The title of this video is misleading. It made me think that Corbyn had just won the general election today until I looked at the date this video was published.

  46. Most rental housing in Britain is council housing and that is similar to low income housing in Canada and the scale is huge. There are more privately owned apartment buildings here by far than local authority housing.

  47. Rent control isn't in isolation. The context is a massive programme of new public-sector social housing construction, to end homelessness and bring down house prices, so it would be sustainable at least in the medium term, because rent inflation would come down anyway.

  48. Last Friday, the UK declared 23% of their energy was Solar powered. That is fantastic and it shows that coal is dead. FYO

  49. You are so wrong about rent control. I moved into my studio apt in San Francisco 25 years ago; the rent was $350 per mo. at the time. I'm now paying $715. Without rent control I'd be long gone; studio apartments in my building now rent for well over $2000.

  50. Sorry, Corbyn is not to the left of Bernie Sanders. Sanders has explicitly said, in the past, that he supports workplace democracy (i.e. actual, authentic, pure Socialism, not just Scandinavian Social Democracy). That's pretty damn far off to the left, Cenk. The reason Sanders doesn't elaborate upon the full depth of his Socialism is that it's too radical for America at the moment, and in any case he's having a hard enough time just fighting for moderate, centre left issues like universal health care. If Sanders lived in the UK, he'd be every bit as left as Corbyn, because he is.

  51. 8:16 The nuclear issue is probably different in UK than US. You have N. Korea with potential to fire nukes at California within the next couple of years. Your foreign policy might make you a target for nuclear nations. In the UK a nuclear attack feels entirely theoretical and Trident, our nuclear submarine costs billions to make and sustain when our actual national security when it comes to cyber attack and terrorist incidences is criminally underfunded. The National Health Service was crippled by a cyber attack because it was still running on Windows XP.

  52. average salary in London is £34K giving you post tax income of £2200 per month. Average one bed flat costs £1400 per month. Rents are manipulated up and they help to keep rigged house prices high. Historically house prices swing between 3 and 5x average salaries. In London today, prices are 15x salaries. Enough is enough! Rent controls, lower prices.

And as for supply of houses, get out the stick. We should have punitive taxes on landbanking (buying land and not building on it to force up prices), and on keep second houses empty for most of the year. Get the stock of houses into use

  53. QE is zero percent int rates – in other words – negative real rates. A Lot of it will never be repaid. So, dammit, take it off them and give it to the people. People's QE should actually go to an equal debt write off for everyone in the country.

  54. Where are all you doubters now, huh!? Where are all you cunts who told me he would kill the Labour party!? Who said he wouldn't last in a general election!? Who said I was wrong and that Corbyn would lead the Labour party to a 1983 like defeat!? You're nowhere now! I've stood by Jeremy Corbyn since September 12th 2015 and I said from the get go that he was exactly what the party needed and look at that, I was right (as usual).

  55. US citizens aren't use to government run infrastructure entities. British and commonwealth citizens are, some like it others don't. The only big issue I have with it is that they are run effectively. The other thing I don't like is when a conservative government comes in and sells them off to their oligarchic mates for a song and then when they run them into the ground, the tax payer bails them out, again and again.

  56. The Tory/Conservative Party are secretly scared of Corbyn because he could easily win the next election over here in the UK and become Prime Minister, that's why they are always attacking him with smears and lies. Corbyn has been under tremendous pressure by them, UKIP and the neoliberals in his own Labour Party too. And our mostly right wing media/press hate him and spread lies too, but are fooling fewer people all the time.
