This is The National for Monday, Oct 7, 2019 — Leaders’ debate, extinction rebellion

>>Andrew: TONIGHT, THE PARTIES DEBATE FOR YOUR VOTES.>>Adrienne: SIX LEADERS DEFEND THEIR PLANS AND ATTACK THEIR OPPONENTS.>>Andrew Scheer: MR. TRUDEAU, YOU’RE A PHONY AND YOU’RE A FRAUD.>>Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau: YOUR ROLE ON THIS STAGE TONIGHT SEEMS TO BE TO SAY PUBLICLY WHAT MR. SCHEER THINKS PRIVATELY.>>Andrew: WE’VE GOT THE ISSUES, THE KEY MOMENTS AND THE SPIN. PLUS WE’RE CHECKING THE LEADERS’ FACTS.>>Jagmeet Singh: YOU DO NOT NEED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN MR. DELAY AND MR. DENY.>>Adrienne: DID ALL OF THE TALK CHANGE MINDS? A GROUP OF UNDECIDED WEIGH IN.>>Andrew: ALSO TONIGHT, DONALD TRUMP’S ALLIES AND OPPONENTS HAMMER HIS DECISION TO MOVE TROOPS FROM SYRIA.>>Adrienne: AND THE COST OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS. WHY MAKING MEDS FREE DOESN’T MEAN THAT PEOPLE WILL TAK PICK THEM.>>>THIS IS “THE NATIONAL.”>>>THIS FEDERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN HAS GONE FROM HUGE PROMISES TO SHOCKING, OFFENSIVE IMAGES, AND YET THE POLLS HAVE BEEN STATIC, SUGGESTING THAT SOME VOTERS MAY JUST BE TUNING IN.>>Andrew: AND IN A CRITICAL MOMENT TO DO THAT JUST TONIGHT FOR THE BIG ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEBATE.>>Andrew Scheer: YOU’RE A PHONY AND YOU’RE A FRAUD.>>Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau: IT IS NOT A PLAN.>>WHAT YOU ARE DOING, MR. SCHEER, IS PLAYING THIS OLD CARD QUÉBEC IS CORRUPT.>>Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau: MR. SCHEER — MR. SINGH, YOU MIGHT REMEMBER –>>Jagmeet Singh: I’M VERY DIFFERENT FROM MR. SCHEER. I MEAN YOU LOOK SO ALIKE THAT IT’S DIFFICULT.>>NO CORPORATION IS ABOVE THE LAW. I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO SAID THAT.>>Andrew Scheer: THAT’S NOT TRUE.>>Andrew: WITH SIX LEADERS SHARING THE STAGE, EACH HAD A SMALL WINDOW TO MAKE A BIG IMPACT WITH MILLIONS OF CANADIANS WATCHING. ROSIE SAW THE ACTION CLOSER THAN ANY OF US AND SHE WAS ONE OF THE DEBATE MODERATORS.>>Rosemary: THAT’S RIGHT, ANDREW. AND THERE WAS ACTION IN QUÉBEC, IN GATINEAU, QUÉBEC, TONIGHT FOR SURE. I’M NOT FAR FROM THE DEBATE STAGE HERE AT THE MUSEUM OF CANADIAN HISTORY. IT’S JUST ACROSS THE RIVER FROM OTTAWA, FROM PARLIAMENT HILL, IN FACT AND THAT’S WHERE THE LEADERS HAD THEIR CHANCE TO SPEAK DIRECTLY TO YOU, TO VOTERS. NOT TO MENTION POINTEDLY AT TIMES TO ONE ANOTHER. SO LET’S GET RIGHT TO WHAT HAPPENED ON STAGE, AND A LOOK AT THE HIGHLIGHTS. HERE’S OUR KATIE SIMPSON. [Applause]>>Reporter: A MOMENT OF CIVILITY IN A CAMPAIGN MIRED IN MUD. THOUGH IT DIDN’T LAST LONG, GIVEN THE CROWDED STAGE AND THE HIGH STAKES.>>Andrew Scheer: MR. TRUDEAU, YOU’RE A PHONY AND YOU’RE A FRAUD AND YOU DO NOT DESERVE TO GOVERN THIS COUNTRY.>>Reporter: CONSERVATIVE LEADER ANDREW SCHEER WENT NEGATIVE RIGHT OFF THE BAT, SETTING THE TONE FOR A SERIES OF TESTY EXCHANGES BETWEEN THE FRONT-RUNNERS.>>Andrew Scheer: I HAVE NOTHING TO LEARN FROM MR. TRUDEAU WHO FIRED THE FIRST INDIGENOUS ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR DOING HER JOB. YOU HAVE CANCELED TWO PIPELINES AND THE ONE THAT YOU BOUGHT YOU CAN’T BUILD.>>Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau: I AM ACCEPTING THE FACT THAT I’LL BE ATTACKED FOR NOT BUILDING PIPELINES FROM SOME AND FOR BUILDING PIPELINES FOR OTHER.>>Reporter: LIBERAL LEADER JUSTIN TRUDEAU WAS ATTACKED ON ALL SIDES, TAKING HITS OVER HIS RECORD, INCLUDING ON THE ENVIRONMENT.>>Elizabeth May: IT’S SO HEARTBREAKING FOR ME TO LOOK AT YOU TODAY AND TO KNOW THAT YOU COULD HAVE DONE SO MUCH MORE OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS. PLEASE, GOD, YOU DON’T GET A MAJORITY THIS TIME AROUND BECAUSE YOU WON’T KEEP YOUR PROMISES.>>Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau: FROM THE ROCKIES TO THE BAY OF FUNDY, CONSERVATIVE PREMIERS HAVE GOTTEN ELECTED ON PROMISES TO DO NOTHING FOR CLIMATE CHANGE. AND WE NEED A STRONG FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO FIGHT THEM.>>Andrew Scheer: JUST BECAUSE YOU SAY SOMETHING OVER AND OVER AGAIN DOESN’T MAKE IT TRUE.>>Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau: THERE’S A LOT FOR YOU TO LEARN ABOUT THAT, MR. SCHEER.>>Reporter: AS TRUDEAU FOUGHT BACK, THE N.D.P. LEADER JAGMEET SINGH TRIED TO PRESENT HIMSELF AS A CREDIBLE ALTERNATIVE.>>Jagmeet Singh: YOU DO NOT NEED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN MR. DELAY AND MR. DENY. THERE IS ANOTHER OPTION, THERE’S ANOTHER OPTION OUT THERE.>>Reporter: THOUGH SINGH AND GREEN PARTY LEADER ELIZABETH MAY DID OFFER TRUDEAU BACKUP, TAKING ON SCHEER OVER HIS CLIMATE PLAN AND HIS OVERALL PITCH TO CANADIANS.>>Elizabeth May: AT THIS POINT MR. SCHEER, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT YOU’LL NOT BE PRIME MINISTER. THE QUESTION IS GOING TO BE A SEAT COUNT. IF WE HAVE MR. TRUDEAU IN A MINORITY.>>Reporter: ALL OF THE LEADERS WERE ABLE TO GET SOME SHOTS IN ON EACH OTHER BUT WITH THE FORMAT WITH THE ANSWERS LIMITED MOSTLY TO UNDER 60 SECONDS, SOME LEADERS WERE FRUSTRATED THAT THERE WASN’T AN OPPORTUNITY FOR LENGTHY DISCUSSIONS. KATIE SIMPSON, CBC NEWS, OTTAWA.>>Rosemary: SO CLEARLY AT MOMENTS LIKE THIS THE RHETORIC IS FLYING AND THE PARTY LEADERS SOMETIMES MAKE CLAIMS THAT DON’T STAND UP TO SCRUTINY. SO WE ASKED SALIMAH SHIVJI TO WATCH TONIGHT’S DEBATE WITH AN EYE TO CHECKING SOME OF THOSE FACTS.>>Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau: WE HAVE REACHED THREE-QUARTERS OF THE WAY TO OUR 2030 TARGETS WHICH WE WILL MEET AND SURPASS. BUT WE KNOW THAT IS NOT ENOUGH AND WE’LL CONTINUE TO DO MORE.>>Reporter: THE LATEST REPORT FROM ENVIRONMENT CANADA SHOWS THAT CANADA IS SHY OF THREE-QUARTERS OF A WAY TO A PARIS TARGET. 79 MEGATONNES SHORT. PLUS THOSE CALCULATIONS INCLUDE BOTH POLICY AND PROJECTIONS. THE LIBERALS HAVE ANNOUNCED MORE MEASURES IN THIS ELECTION, AGAIN, WITHOUT A DETAILED BREAKDOWN ON HOW MANY MEGATONNES THEY WOULD CUT. JUSTIN TRUDEAU CALLS HIS PLAN AMBITIOUS BUT DOABLE, AND IT’S THE DOABLE THAT IS THE OPEN QUESTION.>>Andrew
>>THERE’S NO CANADIAN THAT BELIEVES THEY’LL BE BETTER OFF BY A CARBON TAX. YOU HAVE GIVEN AN EXEMPTION TO THE POLLUTERS AND YOUR PLAN IS FAILING.>>Reporter: ANDREW SCHEER IS IGNORING THE REBATE THAT CANADIANS RECEIVE WHEN THEY FILE THEIR TAX RETURNS TO OFFSET THE HIGHER PRICE AT THE PUMPS AND ELSEWHERE. IN THE PROVINCES WHERE THE FEDERAL CARB TONN CARBON TAX APPLIES. THERE’S THRESHOLDS FOR INDUSTRIES TO STAY COMPETITIVE ABROAD, BUT THOSE LARGE EMITTERS WILL STILL PAY FOR WHATEVER THEY EMIT ABOVE THAT THRESHOLD.>>Jagmeet Singh: WE LOOK AT THE TRACK RECORD OF THIS GOVERNMENT AND IN 2017, THE WEALTHIEST ACTUALLY PAID LESS IN TAX AND GAINED MORE IN WEALTH.>>Reporter: IT’S TRUE, STATSCAN SHOWS THAT THE TAX RATE FOR THE WEALTHIEST 1% WENT DOWN SLIGHTLY FROM 2016 TO 2017. BUT THAT’S NOT ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, LED BY JUSTIN TRUDEAU WHO CHANGED THE TAX RATE WHEN HE FIRST CAME INTO OFFICE. IT WAS BECAUSE OF LOWER PROVINCIAL TAX RATES. SALIMAH SHIVJI, CBC NEWS, OTTAWA OTTAWA.>>Rosemary: JUST A LOOK AT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WERE MISLEADING TONIGHT IN THE DEBATE. AND FOR THEIR THOUGHTS AND ANALYSIS, LET’S BRING IN VASSY KAPELOS, THE HOST OF “POWER & POLITICS,” AND DAVID COCHRANE WHO HAS BEEN REPORTING ON THE THE CAMPAIGN ON THE ROAD AND FROM THE OFFICE FROM THE START. AND DAVID, EVERYONE WAS WATCHING FROM THEIR VANTAGE POINTS AND I DON’T KNOW IF WE ALL CAME TO THE SAME CONCLUSION, BUT START US OFF ON HOW YOU THOUGHT THAT EVERYONE DID?>>Reporter: WE’LL START WITH ANDREW SCHEER’S PERFORMANCE TONIGHT. IT’S CLEAR, SIX CANDIDATES ON THE STAGE AND ONE TARGET FOR ANDREW SCHEER AND THAT’S JUSTIN TRUDEAU. THEY WANTED TO ATTACK HIM EARLY. WE SAW THE PHONY AND THE FRAUD LANGUAGE RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE, VERY TOUGH LANGUAGE AND UNCIVIL LANGUAGE FOR A DEBATE. BUT THE COSTS HAVE BEEN TRYING TO ATTACK JUSTIN TRUDEAU ON AFFORDABILITY AND CREDIBILITY. AND THEY WENT HARD AT HIS CREDIBILITY EARLY. HERE’S SOME MORE OF WHAT ANDREW SCHEER SAID TONIGHT.>>Andrew Scheer: JUSTIN TRUDEAU ONLY PRETENDS TO STAND UP FOR CANADA. HE’S VERY GOOD AT PRETENDING THINGS. HE CAN’T EVEN REMEMBER HOW MANY TIMES HE PUT BLACKFACE ON BECAUSE THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT HE’S ALWAYS WEARING A MASK. HE PUTS ON A RECONCILIATION MASK AND THEN FIRES THE ATTORNEY GENERAL THE FIRST ONE OF INDIGENOUS BACKGROUND. AND HE PUTS ON A FEMINIST MASK AND THEN FIRES TWO STRONG FEMALE. P.s FOR NOT GOING — M.P.s FOR NOT GOING ALONG WITHS HIS CORRUPTION. AND A MIDDLE-CLASS MASK AND RAISES TAXES ON MIDDLE-CLASS CANADIANS.>>Reporter: SO THERE YOU GO, ROSIE, THAT IS BLACKFACE AND SNC-LAVALIN AND JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD AND JANE PHILPOTT ALL IN ONE ANSWER. AND ANGER AND AFFORDABILITY IS DRIVING THE CAMPAIGN RIGHT NOW. AND THE RESPONSE FROM THE LIBERAL WAR ROOM IS THAT SCHEER LOOKED STEREO ANGRY TONIGHT AND IN THEIR VIEW THAT COULD HURT HIM THIS DEBATE. THIS IS THE LIBERAL SPIN AND NOT DAVID COCHRANE. BUT TRUDEAU WAS ABLE TO DO THE THREE Cs, CLIMATE, CONSERVATIVE AND CHOICE. IN AN ELECTION WHERE PEOPLE SAY THAT THERE’S NO BALLOT QUESTION, HE TRIED TO MAKE THE BALLO CLIMATE THE BALLOT QUESTION. AND SO THE CHOICE IS BETWEEN HIM OR ANDREW SCHEER. AND NOW JAGMEET SINGH HAS HAD SOME GOOD MOMENTS TONIGHT AND THAT IS HOW SCHEER WENT HARD AFTER TRUDEAU’S TONIGHT.>>Rosemary: IT WAS VERY AGGRESSIVE, I WILL SAY, RIGHT OUT OF THE FRONT DOOR, WITHOUT EVEN REALLY ADDRESSING THE ACTUAL QUESTION WHICH WAS ABOUT HIMSELF AND LEADERSHIP. AND I WONDER IF THERE WAS A RISK TO DOING THAT. I GET THE STRATEGY. I JUST WONDER IF THERE WAS A RISK.>>Vassy: I DON’T KNOW, I THINK THAT IT WAS DELIBERATE. I THINK HE’S SPEAKING TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO VOTE CONSERVATIVE AND HE’S MOBIL MOBILIZING HIS DEBATE AND WE SEE THE POLLS AS STATIC, THAT COULD BE SOMETHING IMPORTANT. JUSTIN TRUDEAU HAS A BASE THAT IS THERE AS WELL, BUT PERHAPS MAYBE NOT AS MOTIVATED, ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE PERFORMANCE THAT WE SAW FROM JAGMEET SINGH TONIGHT. I DON’T KNOW AND I HAVE NO IDEA IF THAT’S GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. WE HAVE SEEN HIS FAVOUR INCREASE AND THE PARTY HASN’T FOLLOWED WITH IT, SO THAT COULD NOT BE THE CASE. I DON’T KNOW IF THERE’S A RISK AND I KNOW THAT IT’S A DELIBERATE STRATEGY, AND THEY CAME OUT SWINGING FROM THE START. AND KNOWING THAT CLIP WOULD BE PLAYED FOUR OR FIVE TIMES IN THE FIRST 10 MINUTES OF THAT DEBATE.>>Rosemary: SO THEY WON THAT CLIP MARATHON. BUT I LOATHE TO ASK WHETHER ANYONE WON OR LOST, SO I WON’T DO THAT BECAUSE I THINK THAT IT’S AN UNFAIR QUESTION AND NOT REALISTIC EITHER. BUT DID ANYTHING CHANGE TONIGHT FOR ANYONE — FOR ANYONE? YOU KNOW, DID YOU WATCH THAT AND SAY, OKAY, THAT PERSON GOT A PUMP OR SOMETHING?>>Reporter: I KNOW THAT JAGMEET SINGH WAS TRYING TO GET MOMENT WHERE IS HE COULD CONTRAST HIMSELF WITH JUSTIN TRUDEAU. AND HE GOT A FEW OF THOSE. HE HAD A LOT OF GOOD MOMENTS WHERE HE WAS GENUINE AND HUMANE AND FUNNY AND MR. DELAY VERSUS MR. DENY. AND ONE POINT WHERE HE WAS CRITICISING TRUDEAU FOR NOT BEING CONSISTENT AND YOU FOUGHT TO KEEP SNC-LAVALIN OUT OF COURT BUT YOU’RE DRAGGING INDIGENOUS CHILDREN INTO COURT. AND HE’S COMING OFF THAT CREDIBILITY. AND THIS IS A CHALLENGE FOR TRUDEAU IN THIS. THE CONSERVATIVE BASE IS MOTIVATED, 5 MILLION TO 5.5 MILLION AND THAT’S WHAT THEY COULD GET AND THEY WOULD VOTE THREE TIMES TO TAKE OUT JUSTIN TRUDEAU. IT’S HOLDING TOGETHER THAT PROGRESSIVE COALITION. HE SURVIVED THE TVA DEBATE THEY THINK UNSCATHED AND HE WAS ATTACKED A LOT MORE TONIGHT. BUT THE FORMAT AND THE DISBURSAL THAT ALLOWED HIM TO HIDE A BIT AND HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN DIRTED UP A LITTLE BIT BUT NOT FATALLY WOUNDED.>>Rosemary: DID GOIN ANY ANYTHING CHANGE FOR ANYTHING OR THE VOTER?>>Vassy: FOR THE VOTER, THAT’S A TOUGH ONE. ESPECIALLY IF THEY’RE UNDECIDE GOING INTO THIS, THEY’LL BE ABLE TO THEN FEEL, OKAY, THE VARIOUS POLICY POSITIONS WERE ARTICULATED TO ME. I SAILED THAT I’D WATCH JAGMEET SINGH OVER THE NEXT WHILE TO SEE IF THIS MADE A DISIFNTS. IT FEEL — DIFFERENCE. IT FEELS TOO EARLY TO JUDGE THAT. AND THE ONLY REASON THAT IT MIGHT IS BECAUSE IT’S BUILDING ON MOMENTUM THAT ALREADY EXISTED. I’M NOT GOING TO SAY THAT HE’LL OVERTAKE THE LEADERS OR ANYTHING CLOSE TO THAT, BUT IF THE PARTY COULD CAPITALIZE ON WHAT FEELS LIKE AS YOU SAID A HUMAN AND A KIND OF ABOVE EXPECTATION PERFORMANCE. AND WHETHER THAT TRANSLATES AT CHIPPING AWAY AT SOME OF THE PROGRESSIVE VOTE FOR THE LIBERALS.>>Rosemary: YEAH AND WE SHOULD SAY THAT ANYTIME THAT WE SAY THAT THE N.D.P. HAD A MOMENT THAT THE CONSERVATIVES REJOICE. BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT THOSE VOTE SPLIT WILL THEN WORK IN THEIR FAVOUR. AND, OF COURSE, ONE OTHER DEBATE ON THURSDAY IN FRENCH. THANK YOU BOTH, I APPRECIATE YOU BOTH FOR YOUR COVERAGE TONIGHT. THAT IS IT FOR US FROM GATINEAU TONIGHT. WE’LL SEND IT BACK TO ANDREW AND ADRIENNE IN TORONTO WITH THE DAY’S OTHER NEWS.>>Adrienne: ALL RIGHT, ROSIE, YOUR MARATHON IS OVER FOR TONIGHT.>>>WE’RE STARTING IN THE UNITED STATES. WITHIN HOURS OF DONALD TRUMP’S CERTAISUDDEN DECISION TO PULL TROOPS FROM SYRIA, PUTTING PEOPLE IN HARM’S WAY CAME EXACTLY AS MANY HAD FEELED. PAUL HUNTER REPORTS OF TURKISH AIR FIGHTS IN AN EXPOSED KURDISH AREA.>>Reporter: IN NORTHERN SYRIA, EVIDENCE TODAY THAT THE U.S. TROOPS WASTED LITTLE TIME IN FOLLOWING ORDERS. ALREADY EFFECTIVELY ABANDONED. AS AMERICAN TROOPS SEEMED TO MOVE QUICKLY TO GET OUT OF THERE ON THE SURPRISE WORD FROM DONALD TRUMP THAT THE U.S. IS NOW PULLING BACK ITS MILITARY PRESENCE IN NORTHERN SYRIA.>>President Donald Trump: WE WANT TO BRING OUR TROOPS BACK HOME. AND I GOT ELECTED ON THAT.>>Reporter: SAID TRUMP IN THE WHITE HOUSE TODAY, IF NOT NOW, THEN WHEN? EARLIER TWEETING MORE BLUNTLY, IT IS TIME FOR US TO GET OUT OF THESE RIDICULOUS ENDLESS WARS. ADDING SEPARATELY, KNOWING THAT WE CAN ALL GO BACK AND BLAST. REACTION WAS EQUALLY BLUNT AND FIERCELY CRITICAL. NOT LEAST BY SOME OF TRUMP’S FELLOW SENIOR REPUBLICANS.>>THIS IMPULSIVE DECISION BY THE PRESIDENT HAS UNDONE ALL OF THE GAINS THAT WE’VE MADE, THROWN THE REGION INTO FURTHER CHAOS. IRAN IS LICKING THEIR CHOPS. IF I’M AN ISIS FIGHTER I’VE GOT A SECOND LEASE ON LIFE.>>Reporter: AMONG THE MANY CONCERNS THE FATE NOW OF SYRIAN KURD WHO HAD FOUGHT ALONGSIDE U.S. TROOPS THERE FOR YEARS AND NOW AT RISK OF AN ONSLAUGHT WHO HAD SEEN THE KURTDS AS A THREAT. TWEETING TODAY NIKKI HALEY WITH THE DECISION TO ABANDON THE KURDS — LEAVING THEM TO DIE, SHE WROTE IS A BIG MISTAKE. BUT TRUMP HAD A RHETORIC FOR HIS CRITICS. IF TURKEY DOES ANYTHING THAT I IN MY GREAT AND UNMATCHED WISDOM CONSIDER TO BE OFF-LIMITS, I WILL TOTALLY DESTROY AND OBLITERATE THE ECONOMY OF TURKEY. TONIGHT VIDEO THAT APPEARS TO SHOW AN ASSAULT UNDERWAY ALREADY IN NORTHEASTERN SYRIA, WITH SHELLING SAID TO BE FROM TURKEY TOWARD KURDISH-HELD AREAS. SOME QUESTIONS FOR TRUMP NOW — WHAT DOES HE CONSIDER TO BE OFF-LIMITS? WHAT LINE WOULD HAVE TO BE CROSSED IN SYRIA? AND WHAT EXACTLY WOULD THE U.S. DO IF IT IS? PAUL HUNTER, CBC NEWS, WASHINGTON.>>Adrienne: WELL, WHILE THE U.S. PULLOUT SETS THE STAGE FOR A NEW WAR IN SYRIA BETWEEN TURKEY AND THE KURDS. THE ASSAD’S GOVERNMENT WAR AGAINST THE REBELS NEVER REALLY STOPPED. WITH RUSSIA’S HELP IT’S BEEN SQUEEZING THE IDLIB PROVINCE. CHRIS BROWN SAW THAT FRONT FIRSTHAND, THE SCENE HEARTBREAKING AND SET TO GET WORSE.>>Reporter: SYRIA’S RUINOUS WAR MAY BE HEADED FOR A FINAL TERRIBLE PHASE. AND WITH RUSSIA’S MILITARY, THE ONLY WAY FOR MOST MEDIA TO GET TO THE FRONTLINES IN IDLIB PROVINCE. THROUGH THE WINDOWS WE SEE THE DESTRUCTION FROM THE SYRIAN GOVERNMENT’S MOST RECENT OFFENSIVE. SHOTS ARE SHORT AND CHAOTIC AND SOME EVENTS APPEAR STAGED FOR OUR BENEFIT. INCLUDING THIS CELEBRATION OF SYRIA’S DICTATOR BASHAR AL-ASSAD IN THE TOWN.>>[Speaking French]>>Reporter: 80-YEAR-OLD AMINA TOLD US THAT SHE WELCOMES THE RETURN OF ASSAD’S TROOPS BECAUSE SHE WASN’T ABLE TO GET FOOD OR WATER FOR DAYS.>>[Speaking French]>>Reporter: HE SAID THAT THE TERRORISTS WHO WERE PUSHED OUT WERE KILLING CIVILIANS. STILL, IT’S TELLING THAT MOST WHO LIVED HERE ACTUALLY FLED IN THE OTHER DIRECTION, FURTHER INTO IDLIB, RATHER THAN LIVING UNDER THE GOVERNMENT RULE AGAIN. ASSAD’S PRISONS ARE CRAMMED WITH TENS OF THOUSANDS OF OPPONENTS AND THE WEST CONSIDERS THEM TO BE A WAR CRIMINAL. THE RUSSIANS ALSO WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE SAW THIS — A REMARKABLE CAVE COMPLEX DUG INTO A HILLSIDE. UNTIL A FEW WEEKS AGO IT WAS THE HEADQUARTERS FOR ANTI-ASSAD FORCES IN THIS PART OF IDLIB. THIS UNDERGROUND COMPLEX APPEARED TO HAVE EVERYTHING — WATER, ELECTRICITY, IT WAS STOCKPILED WITH FOOD. ENOUGH TO HELP THE MILITANTS TO CARRY ON THE FIGHT AGAINST SYRIA’S GOVERNMENT FOR MORE THAN SIX YEARS. THERE WAS EVEN A JAIL AND TORTURE AREA WITH BLOOD ON THE FLOOR. UNDERSCORING THE OPPOSITION MILITANTS FIGHTING SYRIA’S GOVERNMENT HAVE BRUTAL METHODS TOO.>>[Speaking French]>>Reporter: THTOO. [speaking foreign language].>>Reporter: THE WORLD MUST STAND UP TO STANDING UP TO TERRORISM, THE GENERAL TOLD US. THE DESTRUCTION THAT WE SAW WAS THE AFTERMATH OF AN INCURSION INTO IDLIB. WHEN THE FINAL OFFENSIVE COMES IT COULD BE A HUMANITARIAN CATASTROPHE. CHRIS BROWN, CBC NEWS, IN IDLIB PROVINCE.>>Andrew: MORE NEWS AHEAD ON “THE NATIONAL,” INCLUDING A CBC NEWS EXCLUSIVE. YOU’LL HEAR FROM A FAMILY SHOCKED TO LEARN HOW THEIR LOVED ONE’S BODY WAS BEING STORED. NOW THEY’RE DEMANDING ANSWERS.>>Adrienne: AND LATER WE ASK UNDECIDED VOTERS HOW THEY THINK THAT THE FEDERAL LEADERIN THE DEBATE TONIGHT.>>Ian: AND FOLLOWING A POLICE INVESTIGATION IN ONTARIO. A 14-YEAR-OLD STUDENT KILLED OUTSIDE OF A HIGH SCHOOL IN HAMILTON. WE’LL HAVE THE LATEST.>>Andrew: WE HAVE AN UPDATE ON AN EXCLUSIVE STORY. IT CONCERNS THE WAY THAT BODIES WERE STORED AND HANDLED OUTSIDE OF THE CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE IN EDMONTON. THEY WERE STORED IN A RENTED TRUCK AND HANDLED IN A WAY THAT TONIGHT HAS A FAMILY AFFECTED BY THE SCANDAL AND DEMANDING ANSWERS. CHARLES RUSSIANECHARLES RUSNELL HAS MORE.>>I FEEL THAT MY BROTHER’S BODY WAS DESECRATED AND I HAVE TO LIVE WITH THAT FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.>>Reporter: HE WAS JUST 25 AND AWAITING A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT WHEN HE DIED, BUT NOTHING COULD PREPARE THEM FOR HOW HIS BODY WAS TREATED.>>IT WAS JUST DISGUSTING. THE WAY THEY COULD SHOW THE LACK OF CARE AND EMPATHY TOWARDS SOMEONE’S DECEASED FAMILY MEMBER MEMBER. AND TREATING THEM WORSE THAN DEAD CATTLE AND DRAGGING HIM ACROSS THE FLOOR.>>Reporter: DESPITE DEBILITATING HEALTH PROBLEMS HAD BROTHER RAYMOND HAD SAID THAT HE LIVED AS BEST HE COULD, A HAPPY, FULL LIFE. IN PREPARATION FOR HIS FUNERAL, HIS FAMILY ARRANGED FOR A FUNERAL HOME TO TRANSPORT HIS BODY TO CALGARY.>>TO SEE THE BODY PULLED ON THE FLOOR AS OPPOSED TO BEING CARRIED OR MOVE MOVED ON TO A STRETCHER WAS VERY DISHEARTENING.>>Reporter: THE FUNERAL DIRECTOR TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS EMPLOYEES’ TREATMENT. AND THE CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER ENSURED THAT THE BODY HAD NOT BEEN DAMAGED AND HE SAYS THAT HE AND THE MEDICAL EXAMINER PERSONALLY TOLD THE FAMILY ABOUT THE VIDEO AND APOLOGISED.>>IT WAS A VERY DIFFICULT CONVERSATION.>>Reporter: ALBERTA JUSTICE LAUNCHED AN INVESTIGATION AFTER CBC NEWS BROADCAST THE VIDEO. BUT NOW WON’T SAY IF IT WILL RELEASE ITS FINDINGS. PIZZI SAYS THAT HIS FAMILY AND THE PUBLIC DESERVE ANSWERS.>>IT COULD BE ANYBODY — YOUR DAUGHTER, YOUR WIFE, YOUR GRANDMA, YOUR MOM. AND IT SHOULDN’T JUST BE SWEPT AWAY LIKE IT WAS NOTHING.>>Reporter: ALBERTA’S CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER DECLINED AN INTERVIEW REQUEST. CHARLES RUSNELL, CBC NEWS, EDMONTON.>>Andrew: IAN IS TRACKING OTHER STORIES FOR US.>>Ian: LET’S BEGIN IN HAMILTON WHERE A 14-YEAR-OLD WAS KILLED OUTSIDE OF HIS SCHOOL. A BICYCLE AND BACKPACK ALL THAT REMAIN IN FRONT OF SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL SECONDARY. THE VICTIM WAS WITH HIS MOTHER WHEN THE ATTACK HAPPENED. HE WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL BUT DIED A FEW HOURS LATER.>>IT SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING, YOU KNOW. OUR KIDS — THE KIDS SHOULD FEEL SAFE TO GO TO SCHOOL.>>Ian: THREE SUSPECTS ARE IN CUSTODY, BUT OFFICIALS CONTINUE TO SEARCH FOR TWO MORE.>>>IN TORONTO, POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR THE DRIVER THEY BELIEVE THAT INTENTIONALLY RAN OVER A 16-YEAR-OLD BOY.>>AND WITNESS ACCOUNTS IS THAT THE VICTIM WAS BEING FOLLOWED PRIOR TO THE COLLISION. AND THEN THERE WAS AN INTERACTION AND THEN THE COLLISION.>>Ian: VIDEO OBTAINED BY CBC NEWS SHOWS A DARK-COLOURED S.U.V. IN THE AREA AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. POLICE SAY THAT THEY’RE SEARCHING FOR TWO PEOPLE BELIEVED TO BE WHITE MEN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 20 AND 35.>>>AND A MULTIPLE VEHICLE CRASH INVOLVING THE RCMP IN RICHMOND, JUST OUTSIDE OF VANCOUVER, SENT ONE PERSON TO HOSPITAL. AT LEAST TWO POLICE VEHICLES AND TWO OTHER CARS WITH SEVERE DAMAGE AS YOU CAN SEE IN THIS VIDEO. THE OFFICIALS SAY THAT A PATIENT FROM THE NEARBY HOSPITAL STOLE A CRUISER AS THE RCMP OFFICER WAS TRYING TO ARREST HIM. AND THE MAN ALLEGEDLY RAMMED THAT POLICE CAR INTO THREE OTHER VEHICLES. A WOMAN IS TREATED FOR SERIOUS INJURIES AND THE RCMP OFFICER WAS TREATED FOR MINOR INJURIES.>>>MORE STORIES DEVELOPING TONIGHT IN ABOUT 20 MINUTES.>>Andrew: AND AHEAD ON “THE NATIONAL,” A CLOSER LOOK AT PHARMACARE. IF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS WERE FREE, WOULD THAT ACTUALLY IMPROVE PEOPLE’S HEALTH? WE’LL BREAK DOWN NEW RESEARCH.>>Adrienne: FIRST THOUGH, WE BROUGHT TOGETHER A GROUP OF UNDECIDED VOTERS TO WATCH TONIGHT’S DEBATE. UP NEXT THEY TELL US HOW THEY THINK THAT THE LEADERS (*)>>Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau: WE HAD A HUGE FIGHT WITH THE WEALTHIEST CANADIANS AND THE CONSERVATIVES WHEN WE CLOSED TAX LOOPHOLES THAT MR. SCHEER IS GOING TO REOPEN.>>Andrew Scheer: JUSTIN TRUDEAU ONLY PRETENDS TO STAND UP FOR CANADA. YOU KNOW, HE’S VERY GOOD AT PRETENDING THINGS. HE CAN’T EVEN REMEMBER HOW MANY TIMES HE PUT BLACKFACE ON.>>Jagmeet Singh: EVERY SINGLE DAY OF MY WIFE IS CHALLENGING PEOPLE WHO THINK THAT YOU CAN’T DO THINGS BECAUSE OF THE WAY THAT YOU LOOK. AND CHANNEL THE FRUSTRATIONS OF PEOPLE WHO FEEL THAT AS WELL.>>Elizabeth May: MR. SCHEER, THE CUTTING OF FOREIGN AID.>>Adrienne: SO THERE’S A TASTE OF WHAT THE VOTERS HEARD IN TONIGHT’S LEADERS’ DEBATE. UNDECIDED VOTERS CAN REALLY SWING ELECTION RESULTS, ESPECIALLY IN A RACE AS CLOSE AS THIS ONE. SO IF YOU WENT INTO TONIGHT’S DEBATE AN UNDECIDED VOTER HOW DID YOU EMERGE? DID ANY MOMENTS MAKE THEIR MARK? LAST WEEK UNDECIDED VOTERS CAME TO THIS STUDIO TO PUT THEIR QUESTIONS DIRECTLY TO THE LEADERS. AND THREE OF THEM RETURN TO WATCH THE DEBATE. DEENA BARACAT, A CONSULTANT AND LEGAL TECH AND BRAND-NEW CANADIAN. MARCUS HARVEY OF NEW BRUNSWICK WHO IS REALLY WORRIED ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE. AND JESSICA HARON OF COLD LAKE, ALBERTA, A MOM, SCHOOL BUS DRIVER AND STUDENT. ARMED WITH SNACKS AND SOCIAL MEDIA AND COMFY CHAIRS AND A TV, THEY SETTLED IN.>>THIS SHOULD BE GOOD.>>WHERE DID HE GET THAT NUMBER FROM?>>DID THEY JUST BECOME BEST FRIENDS?>>THIS IS AN INTERESTING THIS DYNAMIC THOUGH, ISN’T IT?>>Elizabeth May: PLEASE, GOD YOU DON’T GET A MAJORITY THIS TIME AROUND.>>OH!>>WOO!>>Adrienne: AND SO THE VERDICT? SO A WHOLE LOT OF TALKING AND THERE’S A LOT OF CROWDED TALKING GOING ON. FIRST IMPRESSION, MARCUS?>>THE TALKING, A LOT OF IT THERE. TOO MANY PEOPLE UP THERE. IF THEY TRIMED IT DOWN TO THE TOP FOUR, IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A BETTER MANNER THAN WHAT HAPPENED THERE TONIGHT.>>Adrienne: YOU’RE NODDING, DEENA?>>FOR ME IT’S DIFFICULT TO HEAR WHAT THEY WERE SAYING SOMETIMES WHEN THEY WERE TALKING OVER EACH OTHER, ESPECIALLY TRUDEAU AND SCHEER AT CERTAIN POINTS. LIKE, THEY WENT IN A BIT TOO HARD I THINK.>>Adrienne: DO YOU AGREE THAT THEY WENT IN TOO HARD?>>I THINK THAT IT WAS EMBARRASSING TO WATCH THEM GO AT EACH OTHER LIKE THAT. IT SEEMED LIKE A BUNCH OF CHILDREN UP ON A STAGE.>>Adrienne: WAS THERE A MOMENT THOUGH, JESSICA, THAT IS STILL RATTLING AROUND FOR YOU?>>THERE’S A ONE MOMENT THAT IS REALLY STICKING WITH ME, WHEN SCHEER CHALLENGED TRUDEAU ABOUT BENDING THE RULES REGARDING JOBS AND TRUDEAU SAID THAT HE IS ESSENTIALLY PROTECTING JOBS. WHICH THAT’S NOT WHY HE BENT THE RULES. HE BENT THE RULES TO PROTECT A FEW THOUSAND JOBS IN QUÉBEC. BUT HE DIDN’T SAY BOO WHEN THERE WAS 150,000 UNEMPLOYED IN ALBERTA. SO THAT ONE STICKS FOR ME.>>Adrienne: YOU ALL CAME INTO THIS AS UNDECIDED VOTERS. LOOKING BACK AT IT NOW AFTER THIS DEBATE, WOULD YOU STILL CALL YOURSELF AN UNDECIDED?>>FOR ME, YEAH. YEAH, I’M STILL LEANING TOWARDS SCHEER BUT THE STRONG PERFORMANCE OF JAG TONIGHT REALLY — HE DID REALLY WELL. I THOUGHT THAT HE CARRIED HIMSELF NICELY.>>Adrienne: IT’S JAG NOW, AND NOT JAGMEET SINGH? YOU SHORTENED IT TO JAG.>>JAG, THAT’S YOUR NEW NAME.>>Adrienne: WHAT ABOUT YOU, DEENA?>>I’M FOCUSED ON TWO PARTIES. BUT ALSO IF I COULD BE HONEST, I UNDERSTAND WHY A LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE CHOOSE NOT TO VOTE. IF THIS IS WHAT THEY’RE SEEING AND, LIKE, I REALLY UNDERSTAND THAT NOW.>SORRY TO SAY. I SHOULD BE LIKE EVERYBODY GO OUT AND VOTE. BUT I DO UNDERSTAND BECAUSE LOOK AT THIS AND BE LIKE –>>WHO?>>NOT EVEN WHO — I THINK WHY.>>AND WE’RE IN A COUNTRY WITH A PRIVILEGE. IT’S A PRIVILEGE BUT THEY’RE ABUSING IT ESSENTIALLY.>>Adrienne: YOU HAVE USED THE SORT OF “DISHEARTENED” WORD AND YOU HAD THE FEELING OF BEING DISHEARTENED AND YOU WERE SPEENGING WITH THE LEADERS LAST WEEK. AND YOU SAID SOMETHING INTERESTING AND THAT YOU WANTED TO VOTE FOR SOMEONE WHO WOULD CAUSE THE LEAST AMOUNT OF DAMAGE. WAS THERE ANYTHING THAT GAVE YOU AN ELEMENT OF HOPE TODAY OR AN ELEMENT OF I COULD GET BEHIND THAT?>>I DO LOVE HOW, LIKE, EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING NATIONALLY. AND THEY’RE REPRESENTING — LIKE, CERTAIN PARTIES ARE REPRESENTING FOR THE PEOPLE, LIKE, THE SUFFERING HAPPENING WITHIN CERTAIN CLASSES AND THE SOCIETY. ALSO I THINK THAT ONCE YOU’RE ELECTED THOUGH IT’S GOING TO BE HOW YOU ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO BALANCE WHAT YOU’RE PROMISING THEM. BECAUSE, LIKE, IT’S VERY ANTI-CORPORATIONS OR — YOU NEED THEM. YOU’RE ALSO GOING TO BE WORKING TO SERVE THEM. SO I — I AM NOT AN ECONOMIST AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND ALL OF THAT, BUT IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE SENSE IN MY HEAD. WILL YOU ABLE TO EXECUTE ALL OF THIS?>>Adrienne: HOW WILL YOU PAY FOR IT –>>HOW WILL YOU PAY FOR IT.>>Adrienne: I HEARD LAUGHTER COMING OUT OF THIS ROOM, A FAIR AMOUNT OF LAUGHTER. WHAT WAS SO FUNNY FOR YOU OR WAS IT FRUSTRATION LAUGHTER?>>I THINK THAT IT WAS ALMOST LIKE A BLACK HUMOUR KIND OF THING. LIKE, IT WAS SO GROSS. AND WE HAD TO FIND A WAY TO MAKE FUN OF IT SOMEHOW. SO WE WERE TREATING IT LIKE IT WAS JUST PURE ENTERTAINMENT. INSTEAD OF A POLITICAL MAIN STAGE.>>Adrienne: HOW WOULD THIS LAND AT HOME FOR YOU IN COLD LAKE, FOR YOUR FRIENDS AND COOL LEAGUEFRIEND –COLLEAGUES WHO MIGHT BE WAT
CHING TONIGHT.>>FOR ME?>>Adrienne: UM-HMM.>>I’M NOT SURE HOW MANY PEOPLE WATCHED THE DEBATE.>>Adrienne: ARE YOU SUGGESTING THAT IT’S SO UNINTERESTING THAT PEOPLE WON’T VOTE? I MEAN, DO YOU THINK THAT THERE’S AN ENTHUSIASM GAP FOR THIS ELECTION?>>I WHANG WE JUST SAW IS A ROUGE REASON THAT PEOPLE DON’T GO OUT AND VOTE. BECAUSE THAT’S NOT WHAT CANADA REPRESENTS. WE DON’T — THAT’S NOT WHAT WE STAND FOR. AND TO WATCH SIX ADULTS STAND ON A STAGE AND POINTING FINGERS AND NAME CALLING IS GROSS. WE’RE NOT AMERICAN POLITICS. SO WHY WOULD WE ELECT SOMEBODY LIKE THAT?>>AND THERE WAS THE CONFUSION TOO OF SIX OF THEM BEING THERE. IF THERE WAS ONLY FOUR, A LOT MORE WOULD HAVE GOT COVERED AND MAYBE IT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN AS MIRED AS IT WAS. BUT, YEAH, IT WAS –, YOU KNOW, IT WAS MESSY.>>Adrienne: WHAT ABOUT WHERE YOU LIVE IN NEW BRUNSWICK, HOW WILL THIS LAND THERE?>>AS FAR AS PLAYING IN NEW BRUNSWICK, WE JUST GOT RID OF A LIBERAL PROVINCIALLY AS OUR PREMIER. WE’VE GOT A CONSERVATIVE IN THERE NOW. AND, YOU KNOW, THE MARITIMES TENDS TO BE LIBERAL, BUT AFTER THIS — YOU KNOW, LIKE WE HAVE BEEN SAYING, IT WAS JUST SUCH A MESS. LIKE OUT OF ALL OF THIS TONIGHT AND I WAS ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND I SAID TO MY FRIENDS, ARE YOU WATCHING IT AND WHAT ARE YOU SEEING? AND JAGMEET SINGH THROUGH MY FRIENDS ANYWAY, WHICH ARE A LOT OF THEM IN NEW BRUNSWICK, THEY SEEMED TO SEE HIM COME AHEAD AS THE MOST –>>PROFESSIONAL. DIPLOMATIC. HE HELD HIMSELF REALLY WELL. AND HE’S LIKE THAT IS DUMB. I THINK THAT HE KNEW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN.>>YEAH.>>HE HELD HIMSELF REALLY WELL.>>Adrienne: DEENA, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO HEAR IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS BECAUSE THERE’S STILL TIME.>>I HAVEN’T HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT FOREIGN AFFAIRS OR WHAT THEY INTEND TO DO WITH WHAT IS GOING ON OUTSIDE OF OUR BORDERS THAT’S GOING TO IMPACT ALL OF THESE PROJECTS AND ALL OF THESE THINGS THAT YOU’RE GOING TO DO. I’M NOT LOOKING TO HEAR FOR — I THINK THAT I’M LOOKING FOR THE PARTY THAT WILL ACKNOWLEDGE THE COMPLEXITY OF IT. THAT’S COURAGE FOR YOU TO SAY THE SITUATION IS TERRIBLE OR THE SITUATION IS WHATEVER WORD YOU WANT TO USE. JUST ACKNOWLEDGE IT FOR THE VOTERS THAT, YOU KNOW — YEAH, AT LEAST YOU RECOGNIZE THAT. AND NOT THAT WE’LL BE ABLE TO DO ALL OF THIS. THERE’S NOTHING OVER THERE FOR US TO WORRY ABOUT, THAT’S CONCERNING.>>Adrienne: WHAT DO YOU NEED TO HEAR, JESSICA?>>I MEAN, I STILL — MY KEY VALUES — JOBS IN ALBERTA. AND CLIMATE CRISIS. THOSE TWO VIEWS FOR ME DON’T ALIGN WITH ANY ONE PARTY STILL. SO I JUST NEED TO FIND MY LITTLE NICHE OF WHERE I FIT.>>Adrienne: SO THERE’S STILL A LITTLE BIT OF TIME BUT NOT THAT MUCH.>>YES. AND MR. SINGH, LIKE, I KNOW THAT HE SAID NO TRANS MOUNTAIN, THAT’S GOING TO PISS OFF A LOT OF PEOPLE. BUT THE WORLD IS CHANGING. AND IF WE WANT TO KEEP UP WITH IT WE NEED TO CHANGE AS WELL. SO IF HE SAYS, YOU KNOW WHAT, WE’LL CANCEL TRANS MOUNTAIN AND WE’LL STILL KEEP OIL GOING UNTIL WE HAVE AN ALTERNATE RESOURCE, AND ONCE THAT RESOURCE COMES ALONG WE’LL TRAIN ALBERTA OIL WORKERS AND TRANSITION THEM. AND THEN HE WOULD HAVE MY VOTE IN THE BAG FOR SURE.>>Adrienne: ONE LAST THOUGHT — WHAT WOULD EACH OF YOU SAY TO THE LEADER THAT YOU SPOKE WITH LAST WEEK? YOU SPOKE WITH ANDREW SCHEER. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO HIM?>>I THINK THAT AS WE’RE GOING INTO THE END OF THIS I WOULD TELL HIM TO LISTEN — LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE OF CANADA. MAYBE, YOU KNOW, THERE’S A LOT — THERE’S SOME UNDERLYING COMMENTS IN THERE FROM OTHER LEADERS TOWARDS HIM ABOUT HIS FAITH AND BELIEFS. KIND OF PULL BACK FROM THAT. YOU KNOW, KEEP YOUR CORE VALUES AND USE THAT AS YOUR MORAL COMPASS BUT AS FAR AS YOUR BELIEFS AND OPINIONS, DON’T LET THAT DICTATE POLICY AND DON’T LET IT TREAD UPON THE RIGHTS OF HARD-FOUGHT BATTLES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN WON BY MINORITIES. AND, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN HELD DOWN. AND DON’T BE SUCH A ROBOT. HE KIND OF FADED AND WE DISCUSSED THAT, HE JUST WAS ALL IN HIS HEAD ALREADY AND HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS GOING TO DO AND HE KIND OF BLENDED INTO THE CROWD.>>Adrienne: DEENA, YOU STILL LOOK DISHEARTENED AND ARMS CROSSED. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?>>I WOULD SAY KEEP GOING. I THINK THAT FOR MY QUESTIONS, I DON’T THINK THAT ANY OF THE LEADERS WOULD HAVE ANSWERED LIKE THE DIRECT ANSWER, ANY OF THE POLITICIANS. SO THAT’S JUST THAT, I GUESS.>>Adrienne: BUT YOU ARE GOING TO VOTE?>>OH, DEFINITELY. I’M USING THIS TO DECIDE.>>Adrienne: AND JESSICA? YOU SPOKE TO THE LIBERAL LEADER JUSTIN TRUDEAU.>>I WOULD — IF HE GETS RE-ELECTED I WOULD LIKE TO LEMIND HIM THAT HE WORKS FOR US — REMIND HIM THAT HE WORKS FOR US. WE ELECTED HIM AND RIGHT NOW WE’RE INTERVIEWING HIM FOR THE JOB OF PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA. AND IF HE IS ELECTED, HE WORKS FOR US. HE DOESN’T WORK FOR THE LIBERAL PARTY. HE DOESN’T OPERATE IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE LIBERAL PARTY. HE OPERATES IN OUR BEST INTEREST. AND HE NEEDS TO LISTEN TO WHAT PEOPLE ACROSS CANADA ARE SAYING WHEN HE’S MAKING DECISIONS. AND NOT WHAT PEOPLE IN HIS CABINET OR IN HIS PARTY ARE TELLING HIM.>>Adrienne: ALL RIGHT, JESSICA AND DEENA AND MARCUS, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, AND I APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND YOU LEAVING SOME SNACKS. [laughter]>>Adrienne: AHEAD TONIGHT, PROTESTERS DISRUPT THE COMMUTES IN CITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WE LOOK AT THE EXTINCTION REBELLION.>>Andrew: BUT, FIRST, WOULD FREE PRESCRIPTION DRUGS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN CANADIAN LIVES? NEW RESEARCH RIGHT AFTER THE BREAK. WE’LL SEE YOU IN TWO.>>Andrew: SO AFFORDABILITY WAS A MAJOR FOCUS OF TONIGHT’S ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEBATE. AND ONE THING THAT MANY CANADIANS STRUGGLE WITH IS MEDICATION. THREE PARTIES PROMISE SOME SORT OF PHARMACARE. AND THE LIBERALS SAY THEY’LL KICKSTART A PROGRAMME. THOUGH NOT ALL OF IT FOR PRESCRIPTION DRUGS. AND THE N.D.P. IS PROMISING $10 BILLION ANNUALLY AND SAYS THAT THE PROGRAMME WILL BE UP AND RUNNING BY LATE NEXT YEAR. AND THE GREENS SAY THEY’D SPEND $26.7 BILLION IN THEIR FIRST YEAR ALONE. NOW IT MAY SEEM OBVIOUS THAT PROVIDING FREE PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION WOULD IMPROVE HEALTH OUTCOMES, BUT ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH OUT OF ONTARIO, MAYBE NOT AS MUCH AS YOU THINK. KAS ROUSSY EXPLAINS.>>THAT WAS THE ALBATROSS AROUND MY NECK FOR THE LONGEST TIME.>>Reporter: JULIA JARVIS IS REFERRING TO A MEDICATION TO TREAT HER ASTHMA. WOULD THEY KEEP TAKING THEM? AND WOULD THEIR HEALTH IMPROVE? THEIR STUDY LOOKED AT ABOUT 800 ONTARIO PATIENTS. ONE GROUP RECEIVED FREE MEDICATION. THE OTHER GROUP HAD THE USUAL ACCESS TO THEIR MEDICATION, TAKING IT JUST OVER 26% OF THE TIME. AND AT THE END OF ONE YEAR THE GROUP WHO GOT THEIR DRUGS FREE HAD TAKEN THEM 38% OF THE TIME.>>GETTING FOLKS TO TAKE THEIR MEDICINES ON TIME IS A REALLY COMPLEX CHALLENGE. FINANCIAL BARRIERS ARE ONE PART OF THAT. WHEN WE TAKE THOSE AWAY, THINGS GET BETTER.>>THE DIFFERENCE THAT WE SAW WAS NOT VERY LARGE. AND WE SAW A LARGE INCREASE IN THE ABILITY TO MAKE ENDS MEET.>>MY HEALTH IS A BIT BETTER SO I’M ABLE TO WORK MORE.>>Reporter: JARVIS WAS PART OF THIS STUDY AND SAYS THAT FOR HER GETTING FREE MEDICATION IMPROVED BOTH HER HEALTH AND HER QUALITY OF LIFE.
