hey Norma I'm David Hoss I'm with the Democratic Committee on a cold winter day David Haas is walking walking and walking going door I'm gonna try over here 153 to door see if I got anybody else to door no there's a house up here I've gotten before a soval in Tier four the Onondaga County Democratic Committee David is collecting signatures to get the Democrats on the ballot for the upcoming election we just have to find five more individuals and then the Duty is complete it's not always easy no luck you know I don't know if anybody lives there there's no window in the door and even though only one of ten people answered the door he loves doing it I'm passionate about the community in the city so if it's things that are going to help us then I want to do it and I find joy in it this Eastwood native volunteers at multiple organizations interacting with people every day but he's overcome a lot to get to where he is now my stuttering is always family a big part of my life and it I thought that a lot more like in my own mind as to like am i enough can I do this can I have a job where I have to talk can I answer the phone can I have a conversation with a person and not have a panic attack afterwards about how bad it went because I couldn't get a word out years of speech therapy and support from family and friends have helped him get used to his disability but he still feels like he needs to prove himself it leaves me with a little chip on my shoulder to kind of prove myself in ways beyond just words because words out my strong suit I guess David calls his stuttering a hidden disability because it is not obvious to the eye he says this has taught him that people don't know what others are going through it's offered me the opportunity they kind of pause and be a kind of person in life David's actions like the new historic signs across Eastwood and the Syracuse history Instagram account have made strides in the community and his disability hasn't stopped him from accomplishing more we live in an area where like one person can actually make a difference and so that's the opportunity that's the opportunity that I see each time I start a project that's why David serves as a community leader at the tomorrow's neighbors today Eastwood region group I feel like it's my civic duty to leave Eastwood better than I inherited it neighbor Mike Turner has known David for five years and is certain that his work has changed the eastwood community he always tries to do what's best for Eastwood and it shows in the results of his projects and experiences like these have not only helped David overcome his fear of stuttering but also embrace his handicap I sometimes think like hopefully this comes out the right way but then I also think well it's important what I have to say so I'm gonna say no matter how it comes out now David works as the executive director at Sarah's guesthouse a nonprofit that offers housing to people who come to Syracuse to get medical treatment in his own words this place is so unique and different were the only ones his co-worker Renee McCaffrey says David is a perfect fit for the job he captures the essence of what the house represents he's able to be very sensitive and very kind without being overbearing towards people david's contributions are evident he's really tried to enhance the guests experience in other words really make the guests feel at home David recognises that people come to the house in difficult circumstances and he knows why he's there I'm in the helping profession so that's what I'm here for is I'm here to help them when asked what made him special David said I kind of wonder what other people would say about that so here's what others think I think David is special because he takes pretty much any situation that even might be a challenge and he is able to look at it with a very rational and calm perspective which is a gift I think that makes a great leader God even takes very kind and outgoing approach towards helping people connects with the people that he's worked with and he keeps them in his heart and in his mind and he continues to see them and check in on them afterwards even though he's gone on a different journey now I think it takes a really special person to be able to do that Fernando Garcia Francis Cheney and CC News
