THE CHARTER FOR COMPASSION

THE CHARTER FOR COMPASSION

The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect. It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others – even our enemies – is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion. We therefore call upon all men and women: to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion. to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate. to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures. to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity. to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings, even those regarded as enemies. We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensible to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.

  1. I think they just used the biggest words they could find to make me feel retarded o:
    Wait.. Saying retarded… i guess that goes against this video eh? ah well Fuck it.

  2. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

  3. @AtheistTower You said it brother. the world will never be a foofoo lala land where everyone lives in harmony on clouds. I bet half these people are part of PETA too. but hey, to each their own.

  4. This message is beautiful, and Karen Armstrong (the one who made this charter) is a brilliant person. If only the people who commented below could understand, instead of fighting. If only we could bring together this world instead of tearing it apart. I believe in Muhammad's, Moses's, Jesus's, Buddha's, Confucius's message. They all spoke about harmony. Why can't we?

  5. @JoanFisher When you go looking for such ideals, you'll surely find them. Treat everything in context. Have you even read Karen Armstrong's work and how brilliant an author she is and what her message is about. Ofcourse not. Suddenly this video is about socialism. Absurd to say the least, when it was made by an authour renowned for her religious knowledge.

  6. This is a nice idea but will remain a pipe dream.

    It wont work for me and others because there are people in this world that I would like to kick into an industrial meat-mincer. Therefore it would be hard to treat everyone with respect and compassion.

    A simple test to illustrate. Imagine those of us of the left in the UK found Nick Griffin on their uppers and begging in the street. Would you help him or stick two fingers up at him as you walked on by? Lets see your measure of compassion.

  7. why not just abandon the whole concept of religion?

    actually it is the one main cause we believe "absolute GOOD and EVIL" which also fuels up armies!
    because of it, we have forgotten that we are just lonely bastards wandering the universe on a blue planet and wait for some "higher power" to make it straight.

    compassion is NOT the start but the END. If you are believing an after-life, you will NOT reach it.
    because yours or others' lives will always be CHEAP compared to eternal life at heaven.

  8. @rahantr1 I understand this is a very common belief, but that just makes it all the more important to refute it. Good and evil are not so clearly defined in all religions as they are in the Abrahamic religions. In fact, much polytheistic folklore plays around with the issue of unresolvable justice. Good and evil is a construct separable from belief.

    And belief is helpful, believe it or not. Appreciation of a greater whole can inspire those who have nothing.

  9. This makes me so angry. This is a lie. And tell me what religion is this? I'm a trans woman and I have NEVER felt 1 thing close to respect or compassion coming from the load of religious people around me. I've been psychically, verbally and mentally abused by these people. I now have an anxiety disorder. Congratulations ACTUAL religious people. This video is but a dream. Why do you need religion if you're this nice anyways. Just be nice for the sake of being nice.

  10. @monkeybahop As long as we are not talking about a pantheistic one, I don't think being a part of a greater whole is of religion actually.

    Religion is the one thing that makes us forget we are part of humanity, nature. People thank god for food, pray for health, talk to him/her at night instead of thanking the farmers, workers, doctors, scientists and talking to your friends!

    When you stick to your "almighty always loving imaginary friend", you turn your back to humanity; the greatest whole.

  11. @MeepullStewray I am so, so sorry for the way that you have been treated. I know that there is nothing I can say that can take away the abuse that you have received at the hands of other religious people, and that I have never met you and cannot know what you have suffered. I have GAD/panic disorder, too, and I know how tough anxiety is. Please know that you are loved as much as one stranger can love another, and that there are those of us who are fighting for LGBT rights and recognition.

  12. To me, the defining moment(s) for conservative religion (Christianity), occurred during the early years of the AIDS epidemic, when they fiercely & successfully opposed the use of any public funds for HIV research & the development of effective treatment options. Thus, thousands were denied any chance at survival; simply because they see the disease as the punishment of their angry deity.

  13. The first sentence is not true. Not all religions practices revolve around compassion. We need to divorce compassion from religion and further extend it to other living creatures. We cannot restore something that it was not there in the first place. Otherwise, we will all have to embrace Jainism or Buddhism at the very least, in order for this to work as they are true religions of peace and compassion. Let's use reason and compassion!

  14. You may think that forming a new one world religion that this would cancel out the flames of hell, but you will be mistaken. I would ask those who are putting this world religion together if they are going to call the scriptures that show us how Jesus died and endured the pain He went through for us as illegitimate?

  15. Whoa- hold on there- whilst slighting the Scripture and suggesting we can all get along which is not humanly possible because we can only do this when we come to the Saviour- this film is promoting new age transcendance which is a pagan religion in itself- the charters logo is the double helix and the term enlightenment goes with occult doctrine- so its really just a charter to bash Christianity.

  16. One cannot embrace religious "diversity" as legitimate and Jesus Christ as God as Lord and Savior at the same time. Biblical christianity is highly exclusive and must be rejected if one is to call other religions true and equal. That said, I do believe that everyone regardless of religious affiliation should be treated with compassion.

  17. in order to spread all around the world, please translate this beautiful message to each and every language. i'd like to add the turkish translation.

  18. tüm dünyaca paylaşılabilmesi için bu güzel mesajın her dile çevrilmesini dilerim. türkçe çevirisini liişikte sunuyorum:

  20. (3) "bu sebeple tüm kadınlara ve erkeklere sesleniyoruz:
    – şefkati ahlakın ve dinin merkezine oturtarak yeniden canlandıralım;
    – kutsal yazıların şiddet, nefret veya küçümsemeye neden olan herhangi bir yorumunun gayrı meşru olduğuna dair kadim ilkeye yeniden kavuşalım;
    – gençliğe geleneklerimiz, din ve kültürler hakkında doğru ve saygılı bilgi verilmesini temin edelim;

  21. – kültürel ve dini çeşitliliğe olumlu yaklaşımı teşvik edelim;
    – düşman sayılanlar da dahil insanoğlunun acılarına bilinçli bir empati geliştirelim."

  23. It makes me really sad to think of how many people are agreeing with this while they eat a veal sandwich or rip into the flesh from a chicken wing- pretending that factory farms and inhumane treatment is as far away as your next mean- and is something you can change very easily yourself.

  24. Apparently, compassion is left at the door when your appetite desires a cow, pig or chicken for dinner. Do unto others as you'd expect them to do to you? Those animals do no harm to you.

  25. It's good you're aware of malnutrition BGBD, but here's some more info you need.
    Polio used to kill many thousands too, all over the world. And it left many others partially paralyzed. It is only because of the prolonged efforts of scientists, medicos, and supporters like the Gates that it has been squeezed down to only a few hundred each year, But if they don't keep going until there are NO cases (i.e. the disease is eradicated) it can and will come back – maybe even worse than before.

  26. Compassion is not at the heart of every religion. Ignorance and dogma yes. You believe in fairy tales, ignore science, and then expect everyone to do the same. . The population increases at three additional people per second. Climate change is on the verge of sending humanity, all of it, to our end due to overpopulation and consumerism. Religion rationalizes that bad behavior for profit.

  27. Also you say,to speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others—even our enemies—is a denial of our common humanity. Actually, people have a right to say any damn thing they choose. That is our common humanity and the First Amendment of the Constitution. Religions dislike this because they prefer dogma. Sometimes the best thing you can do is let someone speak, even if you hate it.

  28. While reading some comments below regarding the video clip, The Charter for Compassion, I just had to shake my head. How easily we are distracted from the essence of this message which is, The Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". This has nothing to do with religious preference or beliefs OR what we choose to eat but rather letting go of ones need to be RIGHT and embracing your fellow man, woman or child with COMPASSION!

  29. Constructive criticism. Where are all the people from all the non-Western countries and Eastern (and Middle Eastern) religions? Maybe a few sprinkled in? Are these spots running in every country of the world? Would every country allow them to run? If the answers to these questions are negative, such a campaign, though noble in sentiment, is only asuseful as a peace march in a single ofthe world's countries in a world of violence and war: it says that only we aren't compassionate enough.

  32. Good thing that was so short – I couldn't watch much more. It feels like Karen Armstrong is pouring sugar down my throat. Excuse me while I go throw up.

  34. The author John Michael Greer actually has a blog post going over Armstrong and TED's Charter for Compassion. It's a good essay examining the whole project.
    Run a websearch for The Archdruid Report for Oct. 9, 2013 and titled The Renewal of Religion.

  35. Compassion is one of the most fundamental ideals for creating a profleurian* world.
    Profleurian means "supporting the blossoming of full potential for each of us and all of us. When we as a species learn to hold up compassion as the most critical human factor to internalize and  teach our children, war cannot exist and the Peace that we each long for will become a reality, both internally and in our shared world.
    Thanks to each and every one of you who are focusing your hearts on this endeavor.

  36. As a Subtle Love Activist, I am realizing how wonderful this Charter for Compassion is.  Another opportunity to get the love word out to the world individuals a call to help each one in distress the best we can.  I am joining today!

  37. There will never be peace and compassion until we honor God first. This is just another way Satan can rule mankind because mankind is weak in their faith. Wake up its not all about mankind. And by the way the way try reading all the evil being done in Ferguson MO. that is not peace they are showing but hate. That is NOT from God.

  38. Religion shouldn’t be an excuse for violence but the video was offensive in the way that they want us to disregard any opinions we have of others and treat everyone equally regardless of what they’ve done or whether they’re completely towards or against your beliefs. Also they even state, “any interpretation of scripture that reads violence, hatred, or distain is illegitimate.” So if someone believes that anything but wife and husband marriage should happen it could hurt someone else's feelings, therefore they should dismiss it. Or any specific thing they believe is wrong with society or an individual system supported by a group of people should be dismissed because it isn’t ‘compassionate’. Last time I checked we had the freedom to believe and act in the way we wanted, albeit suffer the consequence if we act out in violence towards opposition to our beliefs. I disagree with the act of violence but if you are against something or someone, you have the right to be so- but not to harass or assault them. Just follow the principle of ‘being in this world, but not part of it’. They try to mix compassion with the idea of accepting everything which is wrong. You can have compassion but not agree with them. There is no such thing as equality in all terms both the physical and the mental and there never will be. There can be equal opportunity but if you attempt to force or manipulate people to follow certain principles and beliefs than we become the old England we ran away from. We become North Korea. People need to be strong enough to not be offended by others beliefs but not become a blind follower to accepting all.

  39. We can't have a world of compassion as long as Islam exists – Islam always has an always will be murderously violent towards its neighbors that disagree and to internal dissidents

  40. Haha what a load of bullshit. All religions teach compassion? Sure, that's why Christianity brought about the Crusades, and Islam teaches jihad and murder of apostates. Oops, I forgot, those aren't REALLY representative of the religions, because if you read what the scripture says and use it to do violent things (because THAT'S WHAT IT SAYS), you're just reading it "illegitimately."

    And look, brainwashing the children to "respect" all other religions and traditions. Really quite depressing. Ideologies should have to EARN our respect, and religion gets zero respect from me. Should we respect witchcraft too and pretend its central message was compassion? How about Islam, the most murderous religion on the planet currently? Oh dear, hear come the Armstrong religious apologists calling me a bigot and Islamaphobe for criticizing an ideology. I forgot, I should just shut my mouth and "respect" everyone's nonsensical beliefs.

    The solution is not bringing harmony to religions – it is purging their vile beliefs.

  41. It makes me very sad to see that 71 people gave this video a thumbs down. I know the arguments against forgiveness. I've used them myself. Even though anger & hate can feel powerful, and "being right" can be addictive, I know how corrosive and soul damaging it can be to hang on to those feelings. When you forgive someone you are not excusing them or "letting them off the hook" You're letting yourself off the hook. You're not saying that they don't need to be responsible for their actions or prevented from doing more harm. You don't need to be their friend.

    The one thing that we have any control over in this life is how we respond to life. Collectively, our responses can reinforce or change what we are responding to. There are thousands of people who liberate themselves from being "victims" of crimes or abuse by using what happened to them to try to help prevent the same from happening to others. Violent retribution adds to the problem. It doesn't solve it and it never will.

  42. Once again, the heart of this message is in the quote " "The principle of compassion lies at the HEART of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions" and "We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion."
    Shalom and jo,
    Rabbi Roger Ross

  43. this is the way forward, needs to be spoken more slowly though, there is so much content, more time to hear it, what's the rush

  44. Thank you for the humanistic charter. But, let up be wise & careful …“O ye beloved of the Lord! The Kingdom of God is founded upon equity and justice, and also upon mercy, compassion, and kindness to every living soul. Strive e then with all your heart to treat compassionately all humankind—except for those who have some selfish, private motive, or some disease of the soul. Kindness cannot be shown to the tyrant, the deceiver, or the thief because, far from awakening them to the error of their ways, it maketh them to continue their perversity as before. No matter how much kindliness ye may expend upon the liar, he will but lie the more, for he believeth you to be deceived, while ye understand him but too well, and only remain silent out of your extreme compassion.” -Writings of Abdu’l-Baha

  45. So according to the United Church, any belief and just about every behaviors are fine (short of violence) no matter what. I think they call that a smorgasbord. Doing so calls Christianity false and Jesus a liar. Not all religions are the same. All but one claim to pursue righteousness through good works whereas Christianity says, "too late" you're already stained with sin, over and over again. That's why Jesus (who claimed to be God in the flesh and the absolute meaning of Truth) was either a great liar or a crazy lunatic claiming to be God when He wasn't. Either that or He was telling the truth and is God. No other options available. Repent and believe the gospel, otherwise, everyone will get what they deserve for repeatedly breaking God's laws and end up in his prison called hell.

  46. We humans were created in love,  to learn how to love so as to return to Love, the Source of all. Humanity must learn to rise UP the CHAKRA ENERGY SYSTEM of our own beautiful and loving creation.

  47. Where are the faces of Muslim women, the culturally indigenous or various peoples of faith backgrounds? Or is this a European secular form of simply tolerance rather than embracing diversity or developing inclusion. Sad representation for the lofty aspirations of Charter for Compassion. ;-(

  48. I think that about sums it up. The Fiona Project is very proud to be signing the Compassion Charter as a partner. In our work, compassion is critical to helping survivors heal–both in holding compassion for the victims of abuse and for the survivors in holding compassion for themselves. Further, compassion, like forgiveness, does not justify or exonerate wrong-doing. But it will stop hate from taking hold of a wounded heart.

  49. I stand with Global Citizens in this charge and continue to work in an inspired fashion in alignment with this message. Thank you to all who have the courage to also take such a stand and contribute to the GLOBAL MOVEMENT and RENAISSANCE for Life Affirming and Radical Socio-Economic and Cultural Transformation.
