Secret clubs celebrate Ukrainian nationalism in Lviv | euroviews

It’s kind of typically Lviv and kind of typically Ukraine It’s the essence of the country concentrated in one place and also kind of caricatured in a way It’s about good humour I guess and it’s about having a laugh at some things but it also takes certain things seriously And you do have an opportunity to learn about history As a Jewish person living in Western Ukraine I think my perspective might be somewhat the least biased because the stereotype goes that he’s really antisemitic and everything like fascist and a Nazi I think maybe in some way, the truth is somewhere in the midst of all those stereotypes For Ukraine, he’s a symbol of freedom, of nationalism and of fighting for that freedom For me, he’s less about nationalism and I suppose more of a symbol of freedom and unity and willingness to look for tomorrow in sort of a light spirit Of course I understand that they should use his personality to attract more people But in fact I think this place is more beyond that that Stepan Bandera has nothing to do with it And I think that even now he doesn’t play that big of a role in anything related to the Ukrainian Patriotic Army I don’t even think about Stepan Bandera when I’m coming here at all
