REFRESHING | a day in seoul w/o social media vlog

every once in a while probably more than I'd like to admit I need to take a break I find myself forgetting to appreciate tiny moments of my day I lose my ability to focus I literally dream about work I toss and turn at night and end up scrolling mindlessly until my eyes hurt so much that I have to close them if I'm being kind to myself I'll not only notice this but I'll do something about it lately the rainy season here in Korea has been keeping me indoors and I feel like that's the perfect opportunity to go back to the good old days before social media to spend the day like I did as a kid at home with so many things to do none of them involving status updates or hashtags no refreshing just refreshing on this particular day I wake up to rain tapping on my window I unroll my yoga mat and set the tone for the entire day after breakfast and a bit of studying I make a sea bang a pot of tea I take my time choosing today's brew but I settle on the morning favorite I respectful with strong black tea and my cup and rain pattern against the window I decide to escape to London well sort of I just started listening to Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman audible was kind enough to support our channel again and I'm always happy to support storytelling audible is one of the largest libraries of audiobooks in the world and right now until July 31st so do this soon Amazon Prime members can get audible for 495 per month for the first three months that's three for the price of one month after that it's only fourteen ninety five you'll have access to audiobooks you can keep forever and listen to again and again along with audible originals which is content exclusive to audible that rain from comedy to journalism to history my dad just stole one of my credits to listen to something about Apollo 11 after I finished the night tiger with audible I wanted another fairy tale-like story and all this grey weather this month led me to the misty London streets born in Neil Gaiman's imagination bonus it's told by Neil Gaiman if you'd like to try audible and curl up with your favorite story and storyteller you can use my URL slash Keri cakes or text Keri cakes to 500 500 I spend the rest of the morning sitting in my rocking chair watching the clouds crawl by while I'm taken away to London below before long though I start to feel the itch to check my phone if something I really needed to know was happening I know I'd get a call or a text for my friends and family so why do I feel this need to constantly fill up these peaceful perfect moments I turn to one of my many half years to catch book Irish arpan on my dull colored pencil get some inspiration some of you Impressionists more tea more Neverwhere more window gazing at this point I'm getting a little stir-crazy so I head off in search of coffee and a place to study I'm the kind of person that feels a day is wasted if I stay at home so taking just an hour to to study in a different environment does mean a world of good on the way home I grab some stamps and I reward myself for studying with good old West Anderson so much of my day is wasted looking at my phone screen when I could have been doing all the things I've wanted to spend time on remember this guitar I bought off a friend I've used it maybe four times since then I say that I haven't had time but I totally have I just choose to spend it in a different way in a non-productive content consuming kind of way I'll tell myself there's always tomorrow I'll start then but we all know how that goes I actually took the time today to put my fingertips through hell and relearn the course I forgot at this point I'm fighting off the voice in my head suggesting an afternoon nap with a cleaning / dance party that turns into a workout that turns into a back now I don't advocate bringing electronic near water but an audiobook and a bath are a match made in heaven chilling in a citrus bubble bath with Neil Gaiman's voice telling me a fabulous story yes please I will take two I end the day hanging out with my best friend who subsequently was forced to join my social media cleanse sorry Kurt will I check Instagram tomorrow yeah I definitely will but will I go into the week feeling like I've been reset completely I think social media does incredible things but the second you realize you're missing things happening right in front of you give yourself a much deserved break you'll be surprised by how much we miss when we're looking at a screen thank you again to audible for sponsoring this video and to get started be sure to use my URL slash Keri cakes or text Keri cakes – 500 500 so if after watching this many of you are thinking that sounds nice I'll do it tomorrow don't be like me in my guitar do it today just start now and try and go for the rest of the day you're worth it you deserve a little refresh

  1. Sometimes I have trouble sitting down and watching a movie (or even a YT video) without getting distracted and checking my phone. I hope that you can try a little 7 minute exercise to check if you're stronger than me 🙂 Anyone else feel like they need a refresh day?

  2. I loved this video so much! I’m usually a person who will watch a video all the way through without checking something else or skipping, however that can sometimes lead me to watching a 20 minute video and feel like I didn’t really get anything from watching it. But when I watch your video whether it’s 7 minutes about your favorite books or 20 minutes about a new exciting location, they always make me feel something and like the time watching it was spent well. So thank you for this video, it was incredibly calming and refreshing 😊🧡

  3. This made me think I was sitting on that train in the ending of spirited away looking out of the windows hearing your voice through the speakers. so soothing!

  4. Cari Congratulations on the 100k!! This is one of my favourite corners of the Internet so a massive well done and virtual hug to you for creating this community 🎉🎉🎉🎉💖😁

  5. i actually forget about my phone while watching your vlogs, challenge destroyed ^^
but i do have this problem where i can't go through a single episode of a show, let alone a movie- without my phone, it can definitely be changed, but you have to be mindful about it

  6. why is this the best video i've watched in so long …? when you spend your day looking into your phone's screen you are wasting precious time to spend with yourself or your friends <3

  7. It's funny because I'm one of those people who as soon as this video ended, I thought: "this is nice, I'll do it tomorrow" 😅 but it's currently 6am, so you know what I think I will do it today afterall, right after I finish this comment 💖

  8. I do the home/cafe thing a lot, and often go out to cafes to write, especially if I'm in the last push to finish a book. By that point I'm usually writing 5-10k words per day (usually 5-9 hours) and I need to get up and refresh myself between sessions. I start out at home for two hours, then get up and go to a cafe for two hours, then get up and go to another…and so on. The different atmosphere/different scenery/different feel to each one breaks up the difficulty of writing for so long and refreshes my mind. I don't usually study for that long, so when I'm studying, I usually just do that at home =)

At the moment I'm trying to cut down on the soc. media (though I need some b/c of interacting with readers), as well as cutting down on the constant checking of books sales/reviews. It's like a little tic you just can't help but you need to help it because it's eating you alive along with all your moments of spare time…

  9. Congratulations on 100k Cari! I joined you when you were just around 20k. Thanks for always being so kind and helpful to your audience! We love you ❤️

  13. I watched this while eating my breakfast and usually I'd be scrolling on my phone at the same time, but I didn't today and honestly I already feel so much calmer! this is such a lovely relaxing video with such an important reminder, thank you <3

  15. Well I guess I'm going to do that today since I just woke up and have been feeling exactly as you described..! it's rainy here as well, bonus point I guess!

  16. your challenge is sweet but i usually go hours without checking social media so i was like "huh, i got this!!" 😀 anyway this video was really beautiful and very important to remind us that our lives are happening NOW and HERE, not online. <3

  17. Cari, this is so intimately beautiful! Love the edit, the music and your beautiful storytelling ❤️ thanks for reminding us that we can enjoy ourselves by doing simple things. my love for your channel is ever-growing 🌹

  18. OMG! This is exactly what I needed right now! And I will spent my sunday like this….refreshing and rebooting myself….reading a book, listening to music, probably watch a movie and just toss my mobile phone aside. I just need to remind myself of that more often. I also listened to Neverwhere (one of my favorite Neil Gaiman books), but to the BBC full cast dramatisation which has Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Christopher Lee and so many more great actors in it! I loved it! And on a side note: your voice is so soothing, I could listen to it all day 😀
