Mike Rowe’s take: Man-babies and Starbucks ‘shelters’

>>Tucker: WELL, IF YOU LOOK CAREFULLY, YOU’LL SEE SUBTLE SIGNS OF DECAY THROUGHOUT OUR SOCIETY. STARBUCKS, ONE EXAMPLE, RECENTLY ANNOUNCED GOING FORWARD ITS SEATS AND BATHROOMS WILL BE OPENED TO NONPAYING CUSTOMERS. THAT’S BAD NEWS IF YOU WANT TO BRING YOUR KIDS THERE. PRETTY GOOD NEWS IF YOU’RE A VAGRANT. MEANWHILE IN NEW YORK A COUPLE HAD TO EVICT THEIR 30-YEAR-OLD SON FROM THEIR BASEMENT BECAUSE HE REFUSED TO MOVE OUT. MANY DEFENDED HIS DECISION TO LIVE THERE FOREVER. MIKE IS THE HOST OF THE TBN SHOW “SOMEBODY’S GOT TO DO IT.” LATEST SEASON OF THAT WILL DEBUT SOON. HE SPOKE TO US ABOUT THESE STORIES AND HOW THEY MAY BE CONNECTED. HERE IT IS.>>JOINING US TONIGHT IS MIKE ROWE. GOOD TO SEE YOU, MIKE.>>TUCKER, THANK YOU. HOW ARE YOU?>>Tucker: CAN’T BE BETTER? STARBUCKS ANNOUNCING YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO BUY ANYTHING TO LOUNGE AROUND ITS STORES OR USE THE BATHROOM. MEANWHILE, 30-YEAR-OLDS ARE SUING TO STAY IN THEIR PARENTS’ BASEMENTS. ARE THESE STORIES CONNECTED? DO THEY TELL US SOMETHING BIGGER ABOUT WHERE THE COUNTRY IS GOING?>>DOGS AND CATS LIVING TOGETHER! MASS HYSTERIA.>>Tucker: EXACTLY.>>LOOK, I PERSONALLY, I’M IN THE MIDST RIGHT NOW OF DOING WHAT I DO EVERY YEAR WHICH IS TRY AND GIVE AWAY WORK ETHIC SCHOLARSHIPS. IT GETS HARDER EVERY YEAR, SO, UM –>>Tucker: WAIT, WAIT IT GETS HARDER TO GIVE AWAY MONEY?>>WE’VE GIVEN AWAY $5 MILLION OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS, AND, YES, EVERY YEAR, IT GETS INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO AFFIRMATIVELY REWARD WORK ETHIC. THERE’S SOME THINGS MY SCHOLARSHIP REQUIRES YOU TO DO THAT OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS DON’T. YOU HAVE TO WRITE ESSAYS AND MAKE VIDEOS SIGN A SWEAT PLEDGE. WHEN PEOPLE ARE OFTEN CONFRONTED THROUGH THESE HOOPS IN WHICH I ASK THEM TO LEAP, THEY TAKE UMBRIDGE AT THAT. I FIND IT FASCINATING. IT DOESN’T BOTHER ME SO MUCH BECAUSE I UNDERSTAND THAT A VALUABLE THING IS ALMOST ALWAYS A THING THAT IS IN DEMAND AND WORK ETHIC IS VERY MUCH IN DEMAND, BUT TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, WHY IS IT HARDER TO FIND IT? I THINK THAT PROBABLY DOES HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE EXPECTATIONS THAT HAVE EVOLVED OUT OF THE SAFE SPACE MOVEMENT WHICH YOU’VE DONE A LOT TO TALK ABOUT ON YOUR PROGRAM, AND I’M STARTING TO THINK THAT MAYBE THERE IS A LINK BETWEEN THE EXPECTATIONS A PATRON MIGHT HAVE AT A STARBUCKS VIS-A-VIS THE EXPECTATIONS A SQUATTER WHO JUST HAPPENS TO BE GENETICALLY TIED TO YOU MIGHT HAVE VIS-A-VIS THE BASEMENT IN WHICH HE CURRENTLY DWELLS, ETC., ETC. YOU KNOW, I MEAN, OF ALL THE DIVIDES IN THE COUNTRY, I THINK YOU COULD PROBABLY MAKE A PRETTY INTERESTING CASE THAT THERE’S A FISSURE RUNNING THROUGH THE EXPECTATION OF WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE ELEVATE SAFETY AND FEELINGS TO A LEVEL OF PRIMACY. I THINK IT CREATES A REAL DISCONNECT THAT PEOPLE ARE STRUGGLING TO PARSE.>>Tucker: WAIT A SECOND! ARE YOU SAYING SAFETY ISN’T THE MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER?>>I’M SAYING THAT EVERYBODY WANTS TO GO HOME SAFE AT THE END OF THE DAY. SAFETY ALWAYS WOULD BE A DELIGHTFUL BROMIDE A DELIGHTFUL FLATTUDE. SAFETY FIRST IS THE STUFF OF IDIOCY. IT ALLOWS US TO BEGIN TO BELIEVE THAT SOMEONE OTHER THAN US MIGHT CARE MORE ABOUT OUR WELL-BEING THAN WE DO, AND THE MINUTE WE BUY INTO THAT NONSENSE, THEN WE EMBRACE THE WARM GRIP OF COMPLACENCY. SO, NO, SAFETY IS NOT THE ENEMY, BUT IF YOU MAKE IT THE PRIORITY, THEN LET’S JUST WRAP OURSELVES IN BUBBLE PACK AND DRIVE AT SPEEDS APPROACHING 5 MILES PER HOUR AND NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING THAT COULD EVER BE CONFUSED WITH RISK.>>Tucker: THAT IS REALLY DEEP! WHEN YOU SAY SAFETY FIRST, YOU’RE ASSUMING — NO — I’M SERIOUS. THIS IS ONE OF THE MANY UNARTICULATED ASSUMPTIONS THAT GOVERNOR OUR SOCIETY AND NO ONE EVER EXAMINES THEM IN THE LIGHT OF DAY. YOU JUST DID. WHEN YOU SAY SAFETY FIRST, AURE SUMMING SOMEONE OUT THERE CARES MORE ABOUT YOUR WELL-BEING THAN YOU — YOU ASSUME THAT SOMEONE OUT THERE CARES MORE ABOUT YOUR WELL-BEING THAN YOU DO?>>YEAH, ON “DIRTY JOBS” MY CREW AND I SAT THROUGH OVER 100 MANDATORY BRIEFINGS. THROUGH THE FIRST COUPLE OF SEASONS, THEY WERE VERY EFFECTIVE, BECAUSE WE LISTENED LIKE THIS. WE WERE VERY CONCERNED. WE WERE IN A DANGEROUS, HOSTILE, UNKNOWN ENVIRONMENT. BUT OVER TIME, THE BIG SAFETY FIRST PLAQARTS AND THE MANDATORY BOXES YOU HAVE TO CHECK AND THE LOCK IN AND LOCK OUT PROCEDURES, THOSE THINGS TURN INTO THE TEACHER IN CHARLIE BROWN. WAH-WAH-WAH. YOU STOP LISTENING. THE UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE OF TELLING YOU NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR SAFETY IS THE VERY DYNAMIC THAT HAS PEOPLE WALK ACROSS FIFTH AVENUE WHEN THE LITTLE MAN SAYS WALK INSTEAD OF LOOKING BOTH WAYS. IT’S NOT A COINCIDENCE THE MOST DANGEROUS INTERSECTIONS IN THE WORLD ARE INTERSECTION THAT HAS HAVE SIGNS TO TELL WHEN YOU TO WALK. AGAIN, WE’VE TALKED ABOUT THIS WITH THE MINIMUM WAGE, WE’VE TALKED ABOUT IT WITH A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS BUT THE UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES OF MAGNIFYING A VIRTUE TO A PLACE IT DOESN’T DESERVE TO OCCUPY WILL ALWAYS COME BACK TO KICK US IN THE THROAT.>>Tucker: REALLY DEEP. SO ARE THERE SAFETY BRIEFINGS ON YOUR NEWS SHOW? YOU HAVE ONE OF THE BIGGEST DIGITAL SHOWS THAT’S EVER BEEN. HOW MUCH SAFETY IS IN THAT SHOW?>>WELL, SAFETY, LIKE I SAID, IS ALWAYS PRESENT IN EVERYTHING I’VE DONE. DIRTNY JOBS, SOMEBODY OTHERS THAT DO IT. RETURNING THE FAVOR. WE ALWAYS FOCUS ON GOING HOME IN ONE PIECE, BUT PART OF DOING THAT IN MY WORLD IS TO SAY SAFETY THIRD. NOW, THAT’S CONTROVERSIAL. THAT MAKES PEOPLE GO, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN SAFETY? NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU’RE HAVING A CONVERSATION ABOUT SOMETHING THAT WILL ULTIMATELY REDOWNED TO PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. SAFETY THIRD IS JUST A WAY OF CUTTING THROUGH THE WARM MILK AND THE SOFT TISSUE THAT MAKES EVERYBODY COMFORTABLE WHEN I SAY EVERYBODY, I MEAN ACTUARIAL ACCOUNTANTS, HAD C AND INSURANCE ADJUSTERS. YOU’VE DONE IT. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU GONE ON A PLANE AND BEEN TOLD BY THE PILOTS THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO GET YOU HOME IN ONE PIECE. JUST ONCE I’D LIKE THE PILOT TO SAY, LOOK, SIT BACK AND RELAX BECAUSE I LOVE MY WIFE, KIDS AND DAUGHTERS, I WANT TO GET HOME IN ONE PIECE. STRAP YOURSELF IN AND ENJOY THE RIDE. YOU’VE NEVER BEEN IN BETTER HANDS, ADD YO.>>Tucker: — ADIOS.>>Tucker: WHEN THE PLANE GOES DOWN, PRAYER IS ALL YOU’VE GOT.

  1. Anyone commenting here about the right way to loose children try this. Give your kid your phone to play.. Then randomly take it away from him.. His reaction will tell you how youre doing as a parent.. You are welcomed

  2. well — the human endeavor — risk and see if you get a reward. I used to rock climb in younger days — the risk was great — and the reward was not $$$. It was better than that.

  3. That dirty jobs guy, has a stronger voice. I don't know, if it's a natural bass, or hormones, by working hard, or both.

  4. See a lot of this on the roads.Pedestrians (usually on their phone) walk straight through traffic. It’s your responsibility to not run them over.

  5. I had an interview at a job for AC maintenance. I told them that i believe in Safety 3rd… They looked at me sideways and i had to explain that the job comes first, making sure everything else is safe, but that at times busting my knuckles is more important than calling OSHA or Mommy. Got the job lol… not just for that… but i didnt hurt…

  6. Only those that never try, never fail. One can try to succeed for years and fail. That's ok. If you keep trying, you only have to succeed once.

  7. Bill Murray quote to start FTW! I love you Mike! Tucker, keep raking the muck and shouting the Emporer's lack of attire.

  8. Yep this new generation is going too make us all go to hell in a hand basket, there’s so many young people who wants a paycheck but doesn’t want to work for it!

  9. In Bangladesh 1000 people per toilet the don't sell toilet paper and slavery is league with all that you get the world's dirtiest job

  10. The San Francisco voting demographic is less than 3% Republican. You can say Mike Rowe is at least 2% of that.

  11. I now stay away from Starbucks and afraid to catch Hep A or what ever in the bathrooms or even at a table…., in Seattle ( Ballard market st. NW and 23rd st NW ) they lounge around and have their homeless garbage out of there backpack and drug paraphil-crap scattered on the table and even seen bottles of alcohol or beer in a starbucks Cups ! Also getting free hot water and Ice water and seen people get taken away on a stretcher from ODing in the Bathroom ! No BS ! Still going on and don,t believe the fake News things are getting better and just find a good independent coffee cafe ……Sick of Starbucks and the coffee is not that great !

  12. MIKE ROWE : WHAT AN INTELLECTUALLY CHARGED PATRIOTIC MANS’ MAN WHOS’ BOTTOM LINE WELL ROUNDED MODUS OPERANDI IN EFFECT :
HAVE AND USE YOUR “COMMON SENSE” BY WHAT IS ESSENTIAL IN SURVIVING EVERY ASPECT IN THE WORLD TODAY TOMORROW AND YESTERDAY !

  13. Amen! Other than my parents and God, I have never received anything that I did not work hard for; including college financing.

  14. Paying customers should have first crack at Starbucks restrooms. After all, they're drinking coffee they purchased there and coffee is a diuretic. When you gotta go, you gotta go.

  15. Used to really enjoy taking my grandaughter to Starbucks enjoying our treat and playing chess. Until 2 nonpaying actually smelly vagrants sleeping at tables and disgusting bathroom. Will never go back

  16. Absolutely killed it on the intro Tucker! Good news if you’re a vagrant and 30-year-old man won’t leave parents basement!

  17. I agree – and disagree. We don't know the circumstances regarding the guy being evicted from his parents' basement. Certainly, the parents are somewhat culpable: they raised him! (I get really tired of hearing parents complain about the children THEY raised!)

Second – and this is about adult children living at home in general – the world has greatly changed from when my parents could buy a home in southern California for $5,000 on a tech sargeant's salary! Housing has been turned from a necessity of life into a commodity, and we are fast returning the average person to the position of a serf, while those with money to invest become the new landed gentry.

Regarding safety rules, my son, formerly in the electrical union, watched many harrowing safety films, mostly about people in foreign countries with few, if any safety rules, and flagrant disregard for their workers: Chinese being accidentally electrocuted, Indians in a warehouse literally scooping up ASBESTOS with their bare hands and only handkerchiefs over their mouths! One need only observe the people hanging on to the outside of trains, or traveling by bus along perilous roads; or observe the remnants of towns flattened by earthquakes, to appreciate the safety laws and building codes in our own country, in spite of the occasional "inconvenience."

That said, while driving for a ride share company, I was stopped on a sidestreet in Hollywood, preparing to turn right onto Sunset Blvd. (carefully monitoring the late-night traffic), when out of nowhere two guy were pounding on my window, yelling at me to "look both ways!" So as I swivelled my head to check for the (possible prostitutes) standing on the corner to my right, then left for oncoming traffic, these two guys must've come from behind and wanted to cross IN FRONT OF ME. My car wasn't even moving, but I guess because I wasn't looking at these guys that very moment, they assumed I was going to run them over. Or did they? Were they pasty soy boys? No. They were two strapping young men, probably early twenties, one Hispanic and one black. These two, healthy young men were haranguing a 60-year-old (white) woman, who was just trying to make rent!

I usually let stuff go, but this time, as they walked away, I rolled down my window and said loudly, "take responsibility for your lives!" The Hispanic guy turned back, pulled out his phone, and started to record. I kept repeating, "take responsibility!" and I don't think that made for a flattering video for him, so he gave up and walked away.

Hollywood is a nightmare to drive in sometimes, because the pedestrians really do expect you to look out for them. The problem is compounded by the proliferation of bicycles, skateboards (I had a skateboarder whiz by right in front of me without a sideways glance), and those ridiculous scooters: they dodge in and out of traffic with reckless abandon!

So, yes: some people do expect YOU to care more about their lives than they do!

  18. Both these men are absolute gentlemen and inspiration to people around them. Thank you both sirs

  19. Starbucks can have the dead beat, bathroom users, don't buy anything. I will never buy a drop of coffee from the. Again. 2 esspresso and pastry most every day. That's 8 dollars a day close to about 260 dollars a month ,well over 3 thousand dollars a year. Mo more Starbucks
I can get my morning coffee at many other coffee shops. Starbucks rather have deadbeats occupy thier stores than my 💰 that's fine

  20. Mr. Rowe gives voice, as always, to the essential values of our Country. Work hard and be proud of it, and take personal responsibility for your own actions. I could cite many more things, but those of you who are familiar with him already know.

  21. yes that whole safety bit couldn't be more true its all crap companies only care about profits not the people safety is just a word for insurance

  22. I applaud Starbucks for doing that. Helping human beings maintain sanitary conditions is a win for everyone. I'm shocked people could prioritize their latte than giving a human being the dignity of going to a bathroom when they don't have a home.

  23. C’mon guys – more snowflakes ❄️ as our society needs “diversity” 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️. They need to be even more entitled and get more free stuff. Not to forget the evil patriarchy and the oppression of capitalism. Free everything for everyone and the Gouvernement needs to figure out how to pay for it.

  24. What is a veggie burger? I never heard a vegetable say moo , isn't burger made from ground beef? I thought so!

  25. You know you really suck when you have to sue your own parents so a judge will force your parents to let you live in their basement forever….. WOW!!….. and I bet you're not even embarrassed about it are ya snowflake??

  26. When I stopped going to college (I worked full time and went to school at night) my mom said if you're not going to school then find somewhere else to live, I was 23.

  27. Mike, you don’t give them free stuff because you dont like the way they look, color, weight, religion or CUZ THEY DONT WANNA DO ANYTHING TO EARN IT. Uh.

  28. Cost of housing is rising and wages are stagnating, forcing younger people to stay at home and otherwise home bound people on to the streets.

  29. Mike Roe is so eloquent, it is
    mind-boggling !
He is also an excellent example of a wonderful human being !
Luv you, Mike Roe ! !
And thank you for all you do !

  30. As a union ironworker, safety always comes before any task at hand, but he does make a point that artificial means of safety is not and does not protect us from risk when we rely on anything other than our own judgment of safe practice.

  31. Bones grow along lines of stress. That's why so many millenial Maroons are Snowflakes: NO SKELETON. I bet they turn into little puddles of poo when exposed to flamethrowers. I'd love to prove that on a lot of college campuses

  32. 1. It's better to have homeless pee or poo in toilet then outside in the city.
    2. It's a good thing the judge ordered that son to move out if he's NOT working and helping to pay for bills. Basically if he is able to do things like work and pay fairly he should do so, but if not then he doesn't deserve to stay if he would like.

  33. Totally agree with what he said but "lock out tag out" like he mentions doesn't protect you from your own stupidity but the stupidity of others… I trust me… The other guys…

  34. Don't see the problem with the bathroom thing in the slightest. I think people should be able to go into a nearby store to use the bog, or ask for some water if they're thirsty and the like. I think that should be the case with any typical store-based business that has customers coming in and out and has bathrooms and water and that kind of thing. That's just common decency imo, and it shouldn't be attached to some monetary exchange.

  35. Sigmund Freud after his first visit to NYC commented on how difficult it was when circumambulating the environs Manhattan to find a good place to take a dump. A 100 years later this still holds true and then some. When I was a young man in the 60's a guy could just enter the lobby of any office building and seek out the toilet facilities. But vagrancy has put an end to that. So now our streets are becoming like those of New Deli, foul and excremental.

  36. My bank is in the same building as a Starbucks. One night I was short of cash and needed to use the ATM. There was a bum (yes I’m very politically incorrect) in the doorway. The next day I called the bank. They said that Starbucks doesn’t ask anyone to leave their property. I laughed. Having a bum right where I will be carrying cash is not too reassuring to me. They said that the particular vagrant is a regular and harmless. Still, the bank is letting a bum sleep in their doorway? I happen to also be a stockholder in the small bank. What do they think will happen if people don’t feel safe going there?

  37. I've noticed Starbucks has removed the comfortable seating, replacing such with rigid, straight backed chairs; a deliberate attempt to reduce loitering?

While I don't agree with being an adult and living with my parents, especially since I left at 17… I do understand some of the legitimate reasoning pertaining to such. Numerous factors are at play beyond lacking mental maturity and having little to no drive, as is fostered by society. The economy has tanked; the value of a dollar is low and continually diminishing, while the cost of everything is high and getting higher… there's a reason retirees and college graduates are now competing for positions traditionally assumed by high schoolers.

This isn't the Golden Era that the Baby-Boomers grew up in, and their "who dies with the most toys, wins" mentality combined with the ineptitude of our corrupt Officials and their failure to properly address matters such as our seemingly open border, have decimated this nations capability to functionally advance… Good thing everyone is a Winner! and Special!

  38. Mike Rowe is awesome and I agree with him all the way.
Expectation these days kinda suck as far as what I am seeing. 30 and sueing ur parents to stay because your a bum, Get your sign and go urban camping you loser.

  39. Goddamm, the more I hear that man speak the more I realize HOW INTELLIGENT HE is. He may be one of the most overlooked, genuine philosophers of our time.

  40. Who here besides me knows that mike rowe used to be the host of a show called the worst jobs but then they renamed the show Dirty Jobs because saying that they are looking for who has the worst job is degrading to those people that have that job.??
