Martina, our Ubelong Team Leader, talks about Volunteering vs. Vacationing.

alright I'm here with Martina from you belong so Martina can you just tell me about yourself real quick sure yeah so like you said I'm Martina I'm originally from Germany but I have been living in Latin America for about nine years well almost ten years now between Cusco and Mexico and started off myself in Cusco as a you a lot as a you promote you as a volunteer okay I'm Spanish student and then connected with you were actually the whole you belong idea started here in Cusco and then here then we went to Mexico for about three years pulling out the bugle and program there now we're back being here as team leaders so it has been a good journey with you belong different kind of aspects of a ministration being a mentor being a team leader in the field building up a new program and also traveling high school groups it's been pretty good awesome thank you so you ballon works with several different organizations and it's bear with me on the Sun is like coming in and out so you belong has worked with and they continue to work with several different organizations not just our school district but this summer we've got about 30 teachers that have come over and next year we might have more not just come over to Cusco so I've heard the term vacationing versus volunteering and I know that you know we do get to do stuff on the weekends but can you explain to me more in detail what that what that means yeah we always say I mean actually tourists expect to be sir yeah VidCon jargon and we expect volunteers to serve no because it's a different kind of method of being hearing increase policing because volunteering I always say it for me personally it's not just seeing you know the main square that's blessed Animas it's not just going to Machu Picchu it's not just going to the Sacred Valley of course also as a volunteer that's part of it like you said I mean you have a schedule Monday to Friday but then weekends are also you can explore but it's different you know you as a volunteer you get to know people you get to know Peruvians you're there to assist teachers to assist in classrooms and you really get to get connected know basic from Monday to Friday you have a schedule II have a responsibility to work with and it's not just not just vacationing no so for me personally it's a perfect combination because it's just you get to explore the country you get to know the culture but I mean your focus is always on volunteering during the week ah yes okay so I interpret that is we our focus should be Monday through Friday we go to our scheduled work project and then we also are scheduled to go to our Spanish classes and then I need anything that we planned for vacation time should be on the weekends right which and I'll tell you this is my I'm down to my last two days and I've been able to go to Machu Picchu I've been able to go to the Marais the yeah all of all over the place salt mines you name it I do horseback riding so I'm a cowgirl and I've been able to do all of these attractions during the weekends and still make it to work and to my Spanish classes I did leave my work one day I got sick and I think that's normal to get sick at least once but not super sick so but thank you thank you for clarifying that for me and then just real brief can you kind of explain to me the different types of jobs that they're that we're doing as teachers here for my County am exciting I mean we have different kind of projects but for you guys it's mostly the elementary school teaching now we call it in kindergarten teaching so basically as you all have these our teachers we have uses no different classes so primary immune injuries here from the first to sixth grade and kindergarten normally three to five years old so basically they around just the teachers to help them out in the classrooms because nominee that quite huge and of course to also share your ideas if there is something about your knowledge I mean again you have all the experience where I share with the teachers and basically to be there and help out now in a lot of classrooms they also a lot of kids sometimes even with disabilities or sometimes people are just being students and fall behind but the teachers cannot catch up with them right it's nice to just focus on them too and help them out a little bit more friend of course English it's always important I mean some do it more than others but kind of to teach basics of English because that means some schools have an English teacher but to be honest foreign CA shion's pretty bad sometimes I speak English that means going over a couple of things but of course also helping out with that aspect and again I always say an impact if it's the schools and kindergartens you work in or any other project you know just giving those kids a hug or you telling them one word in English you're giving them high or whatever it is just some attention yeah makes already an impact right this is a small impact and a lot of people don't see it as an impact but I always say it is because those kids have a lot of problems at home you know they come from disadvantaged families sometimes they come from far away and just having someone there that's gives them attention or sits next to them even though you don't perfectly speak each other's languages mm-hmm that is already an impact to us so and I think the teachers can learn chew I mean of course you learn writing their teaching styles but also and we want to do that like the last days to get together with the teachers to kind of see you know how do you see their school system right it's what is difference in the u.s. it doesn't mean that we can change everything and doesn't have to either now we say it's just it's a different culture know so better it's just different yeah definitely definitely six change relearning perspectives between teachers I think it's great – yeah absolutely it's been a great great experience so well thank you for your time and I think you and I are gonna have some more at least one more video hopefully more to talk about different aspects of the you belong experience so thank you for your time and we are out
