Labour figures plotting another leadership challenge against Jeremy Corbyn – Today News

Labour figures are plotting another leadership challenge to topple Jeremy Corbyn  MPs are sending WhatsApp messages to each other as they try to thrash out who could oust the party leader   Mr Corbyn is mired in record low poll ratings and a Brexit civil war as his party holds its annual conference in Brighton   Senior MPs are dismayed at his failure to secure a poll lead over Boris Johnson as an expected autumn general election looms   They fear Mr Corbyn, who still enjoys the support of the overwhelming majority of Labour members, will lead the party to a fourth successive defeat  “This cannot go on, we will not win,” warned a backbencher.    They confirmed moves to challenge Mr Corbyn were underway but MPs were divided on who is best placed to challenge the party chief   when frustrated MPs declare they had no confidence in him in the aftermath of the 2016 EU referendum  One Shadow Cabinet Minister said would-be Labour voters, particularly in the Midlands and North East, were telling doorstep canvassers they would not vote for the party with Mr Corbyn at the helm  They cited his alleged lack of patriotism as a big reason for snubbing Labour, added the frontbencher  Labour has not won a general election since 2005 and has been hit by defections, the Brexit battle and the rumbling anti-Semitism crisis in recent months  One of Mr Corbyn’s closest aides, Andrew Fisher, quit the leader’s top team after warning Labour would not win the next general election  He blasted Mr Corbyn’s inner circle for its “lack of professionalism, competence and human decency” in a leaked memo  He reportedly said he was sick of the “blizzard of lies and excuses”, and claimed a “class war” had gripped the upper echelons of the party  .  Mr Watson is expected to electrify the seaside get-together when he addresses delegates on Tuesday  But Mr Corbyn vowed to serve a full term as PM if his party wins the next general election  Scotching claims he is considering standing down, the 70-year-old insisted he was enjoying “campaigning all the time”, adding: “I’m taking the party into the general election ”  A key committee was tonight aiming to thrash out a fresh compromise on Labour’s Brexit policy  The leadership hoped to persuade the Remain-focused membership to agree to a special conference on Brexit after an election – with Mr Corbyn taking a neutral position on the burning issue  But Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry urged the hierarchy to fight to stay in the EU  “Whatever the proposed terms of the departure are, and whichever government proposes them, we must demand a second referendum, we must demand that the public has a final say and we must not just campaign to Remain but we must lead the campaign to Remain,” she told a rally  “It is entirely because of our commitment to socialism and our loyalty to Jeremy that we are out, today, demanding the outcome which will give us the best chance of putting Jeremy into No10 and putting into practice the socialist policies that we set out in our 2017 manifesto ”
