Kids during fascism – part 1

MICHAEL TAGLIACOZZO:I AM A SHOA HISTORIAN SINCE 1944 WHEN I WAS STILL REFUGEE IN THE EXTRA-TERRITORIAL AREA ‘LATERANENSE’. BRUNO DI PORTO:HOW TO INTRODUCE MYSELF: I AM A ROMAN JEW LIVING IN PISA SINCE A LONG TIME, I TAUGHT AT PISA UNIVERSITY, AND WHY NOT, A STUDIOUS, I DON’T HIDE THIS. GIULIO ANDREOTTI: TO BE EXACT I WAS BORN TWO MONTHS BEFORE FASCISM, I WAS BORN ON THE 14TH OF JANUARY 1919, FASCISM ON THE 23RD OF MARCH. AT HOME MY MOTHER WASN’T CONCERNED BY POLITICS, MY FATHER DIED WHEN I WAS 2 YEARS OLD, SO I WAS NOT FOR OR AGAINST FASCISM, BUT “RACIAL LAWS” OPENED MY MIND. SILVIO CUSIN: I WORK AS A JUNGIAN PSYCOLOGIST AND ANALYST.I WAS SO LUCKY TO HAVE A TEACHER SINCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHO WAS ANTI-FASCIST AN MAZZINI ADMIRER: HE HAD AN INFLUENCE ON ME IN LOOKING AT WORLD IN A NEW WAY, IN A DIFFERENT WAY, HE HAVE BEEN REALLY courageous BEING A TEACHER IN THE FASCIST PERIOD. CLAUDIA VOLLI VENEZIAN: SO IF YOU WANT ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF: I AM CLAUDIA VOLLI, MARRIED WITH VENEZIAN, RELATIVE OF FELICE VENEZIAN. AT HOME MY FATHER WAS ANTICLERICAL, HE SAID HE WAS ATHEIST, BUT FINALLY I DISCOVERED IT WAS NOT TRUE, BUT HE WASN’T ANTICLERICAL ONLY AGAINST PRIESTS HE WAS AGAINST RABBIS ALSO. SOFIA CAVALLETTI: WHEN I FEEL IMPORTANT I SAY I AM A BIBLIST, BUT MAYBE IT IS TOO MUCH. WHAT ABOUT WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL IMPORTANT? SOFIA CAVALLETTI: IN MY ACTIVITY I AM A CATECHIST. MICHAEL TAGLIACOZZO: TO SAY THE TRUTH WE DIDN’T have discussions BECAUSE WE WERE CONDITIONED AT SCHOOL: THIS IS THE WISDOM learnt under FASCISM TOWARDS OTHER PARTIES AND DEMOCRACY, SO IT WAS NORMAL TO ACCEPT WITHOUT DISCUSSING BECAUSE WE DIDN’T HAVE A CHANCE TO DISCUSS. BRUNO DI PORTO: AT HOME I’d HEAR DISCUSSIONS, MY FATHER USED TO CALL THE DUCE: ‘THE CLOWN’. My FASCIST UNCLE , A CATHOLIC ONE WITH A VERY ASSIMILATED JEWish WIFE, THEY had BEEN FASCIST BUT DISCOVERED THE BAD SIDE OF FASCISM and WE TALKED ABOUT THIS AT HOME… GIULIO ANDREOTTI: MAYBE I WAS A BALILLA BUT SINCE I’M VERY LAZY PHYSICALLY, I NEVER WANTED TO MARCH; WHEN THE ‘FASCIST SATURDAY’ CAME and HAD TO MARCH IN THE AFTERNOON; I’d use A TRICK: I’d tell THE LOCAL GROUP I attended TO UNIVERSITY GROUP, TO UNIVERSITY GROUP I attended THE LOCAL GROUP. I’d NEVER GO to either. SILVIO CUSIN: NEVER FORGET THAT THE ORIGIN OF FASCISM IN TRIESTE was MUCH DIFFERENT FROM FASCISM ELSWHERE. CLAUDIA VOLLI VENEZIAN: MOST OF the JEWS, WEALTHY AS WE WERE, WEREN’T ANTIFASCIST, I KNEW THIS LATER: THEY APPRICIATED FASCISM BECAUSE THEY WERE WEALTHY AND FRIGHTENED BY COMMUNISM. BRUNO DI PORTO: LET’S GO TO THE ANTISEMITIC THEME, PEOPLE who were NOT ANTI-SEMITIC SYMPATHISed WITH US, ALWAYS HAD JOKES ABOUT US, THEY ABSORBED THE ATHMOSPHERE. SILVIO CUSIN: It IS NOT an accident IF MUSSOLINI CHOSE TRIESTE WHERE THERE WAS A JEW PODESTA’, SALEM, TO MAKE A SOLEMN ANNOUNCEment THAT ANTI-SEMITISM IN TRIESTE WILL BE DIFFERENT, RACIAL LAWS WILL HIT ONLY STRANGERS AND ANTI-FASCISTS… I WAS LISTENING IN UNITA’ SQUARE, DRESSED AS A VANGUARDIST. MICHAEL TAGLIACOZZO: I WAS A VANGUARDIST, I WAS CENTURY CHIEF, I WAS IN THE HONOUR GUARD WHEN HITLER CAME to ROME IN 1938. GIULIO ANDREOTTI: WHEN I was elected to PARLIAMENT in 1991, I WANTED TO CHECK DOCUMENTS, TO SEE IF AT LEAST ONE VOICE had RAISED itself AGAINST RACIAL LAWS OR AWFUL LAWS THAT OBLIGED UNIVESITY PROFESSORS TO SWEAR FIDELITY TO FASCISM. NO REACTIONS ABOUT THIS. BRUNO DI PORTO: THERE WERE CATEGORIES WHO ACHIEVED A PROFIT, HARD TO SAY MANY INTELLECTUALS. SILVIO CUSIN: MANY ITALIANS REMAINed FRIENDS OF JEWS, BUT MANY COWARDLY ESCAPED FACING RACIAL LAWS, AND JEWS HAVE LOST CONTACT. BRUNO DI PORTO: WE HAD THE IMPRESSION of being UNDER THE SHADOW Of GLOOM, EVERYTHING WAS CHANGING, A NEW CHALLENGE AFTER 1938, A PRECIPICE, AND NOW EVEN WORSE, IT WAS THE 8TH OF SEPTEMBER 1943, ROME WAS UNDER NAZI occupation. GIULIO ANDREOTTI: NEXT MORNING I SAW IN FRONT OF THE STATION A MILITARY VEHICLE speeding TO the CONTINENTAL HOTEL WHERE GERMANS WERE, BUT THEY WERE AN OFFICER AND A soldier THAT DECIDED ON THEIR OWN, THEY HAD NO ORDERS, IT WAS REALLY SERIOUS TO LEAVE THE TOWN ADRIFT. SILVIO CUSIN: I WAS WITH MY ANTI-FASCIST FRIENDS, WE WENT TO THE MILITARY OFFICE TO ASK for WEAPONS to FIGHT GERMANS ENTERING TRIESTE. CLAUDIA VOLLI VENEZIAN: WHEN the GERMANS CaME TO ITALY MY FATHER IMMEDIATELY REALIZED WE HAD TO ESCAPE, UNFORTUNATELY IN ROME THEY DIDN’T UNDERSTAND THIS: THEY WERE MUCH TOO FAR away. SOFIA CAVALLETTI: WE FELT NOBODY TOOK CARE OF US, WHO WAS RESPONSABLE FOR US? GIULIO ANDREOTTI: FIRST OF ALL THE KING WAS fleeing ROME. MICHAEL TAGLIACOZZO: SOME FASCIST USED TO SAY: DON’T WORRY, WE ARE HERE. BUT IT DIDN’T MEAN ANYTHING. IT WAS NOTHING. SOFIA CAVALLETTI: I REMEMBER THAT DURING AIR-RAIDS THE PEOPLE RAN, WE ARE NOT FAR FROM ST. PETER, CRYING: TO THE POPE, TO THE POPE. THEY WENT UNDER BERNINI’S COLUMNS. BRUNO DI PORTO: THERE WERE TWO ELEMENTS: ROME ‘OPEN’ TOWN AND THE PRESENCE OF the VATICAN AND OF THE POPE. I’d HEAR: IN ROME IT CAN’T HAPPEN, IN ROME THERE’s THE POPE. IN ROME IT WILL BE DIFFERENT, BESIDES THE FASCIST GOVERNMENT IS IN the NORTH, SALO’, NOT IN ROME. THE PRESEnCE OF the POPE FELT PROTECTIVE.
