Fáilte Gaillimh 2020 | Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture | TG4

If I were three leagues out on the ocean Or in mountains Far from home Without a soul To keep me company there Nothing but bracken and heather The snow Blowing down on top of me And the wind Clearing it off me And I’m having a conversation With my fair Taimín The night would not Feel so long Galway 2020 is finally here! We’re in the heart of the Gaeltacht
at the old pier in An Spidéal. We have flames, plenty of music, and drumming, as we celebrate
one of the biggest events ever to be hosted in Galway. Galway 2020! This year, we are
European Capital of Culture. We hope to have visitors
coming to Galway this year from all over Ireland and Europe. It’s wonderful to have a spotlight being shone on culture
in the West of Ireland, and especially in Galway,
which is full to the brim of culture. It’s great to see Europe and Ireland
investing in Galway and examining the possibilities and the positivity
that the arts and culture provide. Expect variety.
Expect widespread cultural events. Expect to see companies and artists
from Galway and further afield performing in the city,
around the county, on beaches, in old buildings.
Expect the unexpected. It will be wonderful,
not just for Galway, but for the county and for everyone
right across the country. We started before Christmas. Every Saturday
in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Most of us didn’t
know each other before then. Do you drum regularly? No, I never did it before! I think there are only two or three
out of the whole group who had any
previous drumming experience. We’re all virgin drummers! One of the actors from Derry Girls
will be in the Taibhdhearc, so I want to go see that. I think it’s nice.
It’s bringing people here. The atmosphere is wonderful,
everyone’s in great form. It’s lovely to have it here,
bringing everyone together. I think we will see the spirit of Galway city and county
soar in 2020. The most important thing
is that it’s building on all the work
that has been done up to now. In the Western Development Commission
we believe that there’s scope
for further developments. We look forward to working
with the other participants and building significantly
on these foundations. It offers Europeans a chance
to visit the very edge of the Continent and to experience
the vitality and energy of the place. It’s an opportunity to provide
a platform for Galway and for the artists who live here to come together
and create something new. I’m really looking forward
to Galway 2020 I think it’s wonderful
for the city and county. Half of the events
will take place in the city and the other half will take place on the beaches, bogs and mountains. As far south as Inis Oírr
and east to Ballinasloe. There’s something for everyone. There will be lights On the sand dunes And I’ll not suffer any loneliness there.
