Australian of the Year: Dr Raymond Shuey, road safety campaigner #AOTY2020

My life experiences have been
as a Vietnam veteran, as a career police officer, as an international road safety specialist, and now as the president of the International Safety Foundation. I lost my newly married brother and sister-in-law in an horrific motor vehicle crash about 45 years ago. That impacts upon me on a daily basis. As a police officer, I was responsible for
attending many, many fatal crashes and delivering that knock at the door to inform
mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers of a fatal car crash involving their family. I know and understand the trauma and the tragedy
that families feel when they receive that knock on the door at two
o’clock in the morning. This is something that has driven me in a
passionate way to try and prevent other people having to suffer
those same consequences that we did. My passion overall is to ensure that we encourage
and instill in others the need for a change in mindset on our roads. The mindset needs to be a safety culture. My recent PhD in international road safety and my remission from cancer has made me
determined to increase the knowledge across the world, and particularly in Australia, of the dangers and
risks on our roads and the need to adopt a mindset of changing that
culture of road safety. It affects us all. Not only the individuals, sometimes we’re innocent
victims. Other times it’s an offender. Road trauma is both predictable and preventable. All life matters.
