Animal Humane Society Provides Free Healthcare for Pets

we started doing wellness clinics in 2015 the purpose of the clinic is to provide free vaccines free wellness care food and resources to the community the main reason we do it is because it's a part of our mission it's a part of what animal humane society stands for and the goal with these clinics and really the entire community outreach program is to keep animals in their homes we want families to be able to keep their animals and keep their pets and so by providing people with the resources that they need they're able to do that this is the fourth year that my boys have come here and it means the world to me because I am on a fixed income and I it's one of the best things that could ever happen to me so the food outreach program is focused in frog town in East st. Paul and we chose those locations because they are what we refer to as a resource desert so anyone living in that area that may be low income and has a pet it is there's essentially nothing for them as far as low cost of that care goes we want to keep the services to this community specifically so marketing is it's all guerilla marketing boots on the ground you have two full-time community organizers and they are going door-to-door flyering talking to community members they are at every community event they can possibly be at the fraction usig Eastside communities are incredible to work in the people that live there are amazing they've been so welcoming and so just appreciative of the work which i think is really important too because it's on our end it is it is hard work and to know that the work is appreciated makes a really big difference I'm coming this program for like five years already and everybody's really helped and you know this program is Macey you get to be support this program because like it's never alive we've been coming here since Simba was a puppy and he's eight now that care can be super expensive and we just appreciate the fact that we can come here and get it done for free and you know make sure he's taken care of we've we've talked to a lot of people and they're their animals our family that's not it is not simply just a dog or just a cat these are a part of their family and so when they're living low income if they're you know going through a crisis or a hard time they will make the choice to to feed their animals to feed their their family before themselves and so we we hear that and we want to help them deal with those issues so that's a big part of why we've started food distribution so we distribute hundreds of bags of food thousands of pounds of food every month to local food shelves so that people can get that food that they need to help them get through the month to watch hundreds of people stand in line for hours to be seen by a veterinarian to have their animal you know get vaccines and get food is I think it just it's it goes to show that the work that we're doing matters to people and that the need is there in the moment it's chaotic and it's it's a little bit crazy and you're exhausted at the end of the day but to kind of sit back and and put all the pieces together and think you know the organizers canvassed for hours and hours they walked miles truck you know getting information out about these events seeing the organization come together with operation staff and about services and we have donors that come out and participate in the events and kind of everybody coming together for this goal of making the lives of pet owners easier is it's incredibly rewarding and for me really it makes me feel very grateful to be a part of an organization that supports this and continues to support it and continues to support the growth because it's it's continues to grow and which is also I think incredible the program has become more than I think anyone thought that it would be when we first came into the community we told the community you know we're coming here and we're gonna stay we're not coming to provide services for a limited amount of time and then we're gonna leave and that was a promise that we made to the community we have made that commitment to the community that we will be here and we will provide resources and services as long as they're needed and the the capacity of that and what that looks like will will change but we we will always be there
