Aaron Day – BSc (Hons) Film and Media and MA Film and Cultural Studies

(Aaron) Effectively I’m in charge in helping
Year 10 and Year 11 to academically achieve across their school experience. For me, it’s less to do with
what they are doing within the classroom and
much more to do with building projects and initiatives that are
going to help to increase their aspirations outside of school, help them
to see the bigger picture. I did a BA (Hons) in Film and Media
and it was probably one of the best life choices that I’ve ever made. The course was a really
great balance between theory and taking that theory and putting it into practice.
You know, I did courses on everything from American contemporary
horror through to Japanese cinema and Japanese cinema history through to making
documentaries. And having that wide range of different things to get involved in gave me a very wholesome university experience. My Masters was Film and Cultural
Studies, it gave me an opportunity to further explore the things I enjoyed
and that I was passionate about. It went into great depth of
new areas of film that I hadn’t really anticipated before and some new challenges that I wasn’t anticipating,
and that level up from a BA to an MA was quite a leap as well. What was
excellent was that the support was there. My lecturers, the academic mentors
that I had, were incredibly supportive and if I ever needed them, they were very
very welcoming, and you know, very very communicative so I’ll always appreciate
that help I got from them. The University offered me a position to do a Post
Compulsory Education training position for a PGCE. And again I leapt in with two feet,
and I’ll never look back. It’s probably one of the best career
choices I made because it’s led to me having some brilliant experiences
within the education sector. I use film on a fairly regular basis but
I use it as an educational resource and the things that I learnt from Film and Media
has allowed me to build some fantastic educational materials. It’s also helped
me to promote our school, it’s also helped me to help young people to be
great filmmakers as well. For me, being able to learn my passion within
Film and Media has allowed me to then pay it forward and give younger people the same
opportunities I had. I’ve met some amazing young people that I hope that in
some way or another I’ve inspired. And my drive and my determination to do that
has stemmed from my time at University. You know whatever it is that you want to
achieve at the University of Sunderland… As long as you have got the positive
mindset and you’re willing to work hard. The facility is there for you to achieve
that.
